That period between Christmas and returning to school can be tough on parents who might be running low on entertainment ideas. No worries! We’ve rounded up several ideas from camps and classes to attractions and sporting events to help get you through holiday vacation. Here’s how to survive winter break with your kids in Des Moines. 

Camps & Classes

Winter Break Camp at Des Moines Art Center

Spend an exciting week with paint, clay, found objects and more at Des Moines Art Center’s Winter Break Art Camp. Campers have adventurous experiences looking at, talking about, and making art with a team of fun and creative educators and artists.  A number of classes are offered to kids and families of all skill levels.

When: December 26th – 30th, 2016

Cost: Tuition varies depending on number of classes and campers attending.

Ages: 4-17.  Parent+Child and Family workshops are also offered.

Winter Break Camp at Living History Farms

Sign up for one day or every day of these history focused winter break camps at Living History Farms in Urbandale.  Kids can choose from themes like Iowa Statehood Day, Victorian Holidays, Celebrations Around the World and Flynn Family Camp.  All Camps run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day and the registration deadline is December 14th.

When:  December 27th – 30th, 2016

Cost: Costs vary by camp and number of days attended.  Camp costs start at $42.50/members and $50/non-members for one day and go up to $170/members and $200/non-members for all four days.

Ages: Grades 2-5.  All ages can attend Family Camp.

Winter Camps at Science Center of Iowa

Keep those brains active during winter break at the Science Center of Iowa Winter Camps. Kids will enjoy activities that encourage creative and analytical thinking with hands-on experiments. Camp themes include penguins and polar bears, winter sensations, SCI Adventures, sound exploration and more.

When: December 27th-30th, 2016

Cost: Half Day Camp Non-Members /$35 Members/$30; Full Day Camp Non-Members/$70 and Members/$60

Ages: Pre-K – Grade 8.

Winter Break Workshops at Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

For kids who love to get their hands dirty and discover new things, attending a drop-in Winter Break Workshop at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is the perfect choice. Each Workshop will explore gardening, the natural world and provide hands-on activities, so your little ones can put their green thumb to work over winter break.

When: December 27th – 30th, 2016

Cost: Members – Adult/Child pair – $10.50, additional child – $7.50; Nonmembers – Adult/Child pair – $18, additional child – $10

Ages: All ages.  Parents attend with child.

Winter Break Day Camps at the Des Moines Playhouse

Have a budding thespian entertaining you daily? Sign ‘em up for a Winter Break Workshop at the Des Moines Playhouse.  Kids can learn make-up design in Make-Up 102 or “get to know each other” by acting out a few stories.

When: December 23rd and December 28th-30th, 2016

Cost: $100 Subscribers/$110 Non-Subscribers

Ages: Grades 1-8.

Skating, Bowling & Jumping

Ice Skating & Roller Skating

These local ice skating and roller rinks are featuring special extended hours to keep your kids entertained while they are out of school.

When: December 23rd – December 31st, 2016 at 10:00 am to 11:00 pm

Cost: Public Skate – Monday through Thursday: $6 for Adults; $3.75 for Children (age 6-12) and Seniors; $4.25 Skate Rental; Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays: $7.50 for Adults; $5.25 for Children (age 6-12) and Seniors; $4.25 for Skate Rental – Children five and under are always free admission with $4.25 skate rental.

When: Public Skate – Thursday, December 22nd 6:00 to 8:00 pm (Picture with Santa); Friday, December 23rd at 1:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:30 to 9:30 pm; Monday December 26th at 1:00 to 4:00 pm; Wednesday, December 28th at 1:00 to 4:00 pm and 5:00 to 8:00 pm; Thursday December 29th at 1:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm; Friday December 30th at 1:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:30 to 9:30 pm; Saturday December 31st at 11:30 to 7:00 pm and Sunday, January 4th at 1:30 to 4:00 pm.

Cost: $6 per session OR $10 all day. $3 roller skates, $3 inline skates, $3 skate mates.

Bowling

Local bowling centers offer family fun throughout winter break week.

Great Escape

When: Open Bowling – Friday, December 23 at 11:00 am to 2:00 am; Saturday, December 24 at 11:00 am to 5:00 pm; Monday, December 26 through Thursday, December 28 at 11:00 am to 5pm, Thursday, December 29 at 11:00 am to 11:00 pm; Friday, December 24 at 11:00 am to 2:00 am; Saturday, December 31 at 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, January 1, 2017 at 9:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Warrior Lanes

When: Open Bowling –Friday, December 23 at 12:00 Noon to 12:00 Midnight; Saturday December 24 at 12:00 Noon to 5:00 pm; Sunday, December 25 at 5:00 to 10:00 pm; Monday, December 26 through Thursday, December 29 at 12:00 Noon to 10:00 pm; Friday, December 23 at 12:00 Noon to 12:00 Midnight; Saturday December 31 at 11:00 am to 1:00 am and Sunday, January 1 at 12:00 Noon to 10:00 pm.

Jumping

Kids can burn off some energy during winter break at local indoor jump and play places.

When: Open Jump: Saturday, December 24 at 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; December 26 and 27 at 10:00 am to  9:00 pm; December 28 and 29 – Toddler Time at 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and Open Jump at 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm; December 30 and 31 – Open Jump at 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and Jumpapalooza at 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Cost: 30 Minutes: $10; 60 Minutes: $14; 90 Minutes: $18; 120 Minutes: $22

The Playground for Kids

When: Open Jump: Friday, December 23rd at 10:00 am to 8:00 pm; December 26th – December 30th at 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday, December 31st at 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Cost:  2 – 12 years old $8.50; Walkers up to 23 months old $5.50 and Special Needs $5.50. Non-Walkers free with a paying child.

Sporting Events

Iowa Energy Basketball Games

The Iowa Energy will see lots of play at Wells Fargo Arena over Winter Break.

When: Friday, December 23rd at 7:00 pm vs. Sioux Falls Skyforce and Tuesday, December 27th at 7:00 pm vs. Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Cost: Single Game Tickets start at $10.00

Iowa Wild Hockey Games

The Wild will be on the ice at the Well over the long holiday break.

When: Monday, December 26 vs. Rockford Icehogs at 7:00 pm and Saturday, December 31 vs. Chicago at 3:00 pm

Cost: Single Game Tickets start at $10.00.

Des Moines Buccaneers Hockey Game

Introduce the kids to hockey at Buccaneer Arena over winter break.

When: Friday, December 30 vs. Omaha Lancers at 7:05 pm

Cost: Single Game Tickets start at $14.00 (adult) and $11.00 (child 12 & under).
