2017 The Best Sledding Hills in Des Moines

Bundle up the kids in hats, scarves and mittens and head for the hills!  Take your kids out to the nearest sledding hill for a fun afternoon of high speeds and excitement. Nothing screams winter in Iowa more than a fun afternoon of sledding. Once it snows you’ll find that there’s plenty of sledding terrain in Des Moines.

Know Before You Go

  • Call ahead to:
    • verify that sledding is allowed, some places only allow sledding after receiving several inches of snow.
    • ask for permission before sledding on private property.
    • verify what facilities are available on-site. Most local parks winterize their restrooms and you will not have access to them.
    • verify where the sledding hill is within the park or golf course.
  • Make sure the hill—and the space at the bottom of it—is completely clear of trees, fences, utility poles, and other obstacles.
  • Consider wearing a helmet. The head is the most common area of the body to get hurt—accounting for 34 percent of all sledding injuries.
  • Make sure your kids know that once their run is done, they should quickly move to the side, out of the other sledders’ way.
  • Try to sled during the daytime, when visibility is better. If you go sledding at night, make sure the hillside is well lit and all potential hazards are visible.
  • Remember to dress for the weather.
  • Bring along a warm beverage and a snack.
  • And, don’t forget your camera.
