As Turkey Day approaches, we’ve rounded up Thanksgiving-themed events and activities to help you and your kiddos get in the mood to celebrate the season right here in Des Moines. You’ll find a range of fun from a Native American History Day where you can try throwing an atlatl to fun story times and Thanksgiving crafts. Here’s nine ways to have a little fun with the fam this Thanksgiving season in Des Moines.

Dessert will be the hit of your family’s Thanksgiving feast when your kiddo is the baker! Kids can join Williams and Sonoma on November 4th and learn how to make an awesome pumpkin pie that everyone will love. Then come back for seconds on November 11th, when kids can tie on their apron and whip up some delicious side dishes for the holiday meal. Both classes are suitable for ages 8-13. Celebrate the history of Native Americans at Yellow Banks Park. Try building a tipi or throwing an atlatl. You’ll also take a short hike to the last remaining burial mound in the park. FREE. No registration required.

This November the Ankeny Library will host three Ankeny Community Theatre workshops for kids. On November 6th, 1st and 2nd Graders can learn basic acting skills and will recreate the well-known Thanksgiving story “Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving”. On November 8th, 3rd and 5th graders will do the same with “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”. And, on November 9th 4 to 6-year olds will get to use movement, vocal work, and creative drama techniques to stretch their imaginations and recreate this month’s story “Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving”.

Take the family to Warrior Lanes in Waukee for a safe, fun-filled afternoon of bowling. This is an alcohol free event. They will have glow-in-the-dark bowling, concert lights, fog, and their black lights going. The fee is $55 per lane, which includes: two hours of bowling, shoe rental, one large pizza, and a pitcher of soda.

Urbandale Parks and Recreation invites kids ages 5-11 to join them to make holiday themed crafts. This month’s session will be themed around Thanksgiving. The fee for this activity is $8 and you need to register on-line.

Gobble, Gobble Story Time and Edible Craft at the Clive Public Library. Join them to “turkey around” at the library for a high-flying time! This evening will be filled with silly stories, music, and activities including a sweet treat to construct and gobble up.

Capital Square and Kaleidoscope at the Hub
A perfect place to stock up for your Thanksgiving meal. Farmers will be selling a variety of locally raised products including eggs, beef, pork, duck, turkeys, holiday hams, and a variety of late season and greenhouse produce. Shoppers can also expect to find an abundance of fresh handmade products including locally produced honey, jams, salsa, wine, cheese, noodles, breads, pies and cinnamon rolls. The event is FREE and open to the public.

In celebration of Thanksgiving Barnes & Noble will feature a special story, Bear Says Thanks. There will also be coloring and activities to follow the stories.

Enjoy a 3-mile hike through beautiful Brown’s Woods, Iowa’s largest urban forest preserve. Polk County Conservation Naturalists will talk about turkeys and how animals are preparing for winter all while you’re burning some calories. FREE. No registration required.
