Easter Sunday is April 1st this year – no joke! It’s just a hop, skip, and a jump away. One of the best ways to celebrate with kids is to attend one of the Metro’s treat-filled egg hunts. And, the best part for parents is that most of them are FREE. However, keep in mind, since they are free Easter egg hunts in Des Moines are extremely popular so arrive early and expect hordes. Or get your photo op with the Easter Bunny in ahead of time. Here’s your guide to Easter Egg Hunts in Des Moines.

Easter Egg Hunts in Des Moines:
When the sun goes down, the fun begins! Hosted by Indianola Parks and Recreation in Pickard Park the hunt takes place from 8:00 to 9:30 pm. Participants need to bring a sack or basket to collect eggs, and their own flashlight. After the hunt prizes will be awarded and then join us for s’mores around the campfire. $7.50 per child (nonresidents) or $6.00 each (residents). Please register by March 16th.
FREE: Debra Heights Wesleyan Church in Beaverdale will host their annual Easter Egg hunt at Woodlawn Park at 9:00 am. They welcome infants through fifth graders from the community to see how many eggs they can “hunt up”.
FREE: Please join New Life Church for an Easter egg hunt from 9:00 to 11:00 am, all ages are welcome. In addition to the hunt they will also have crafts, face painting, a bounce house, playground, games, popcorn and cotton candy.
FREE: The Polk City Kiwanis hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt starting at 10:00 am on the Polk City Square. You can also grab a bite to eat at their Annual Pancake Breakfast the same day from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon.
FREE: Come on out to Oak Park Elementary School for Revive Church’s 4th Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Registration is at 10:15 am where there will be games, face painting, and giveaways. The hunt will be precisely at 11:00 am! From Toddler to 6th Grade; there will be something for everyone.
FREE: Bring friends and family and hop on over to West Des Moines Christian Church. They will host their annual Easter Egg Hunt at 11:00 am. They will have two different age divisions, kids 0-5 and K through 5th grade. In addition they’ll have some eggstra-terrific games and treats.
Join Des Moines Parks and Recreation Environmental Education on March 24th AND 25th in Ewing Park for some traditional egg hunt fun with a modern fun twist. At this event, each registered participant will use a hand-held GPS unit to find the location of prizes hidden in the park. Register for either a 1:00pm or 1:45pm start time here, $10 per child.
FREE: Hop on over to Prairie Vista Village in Altoona from 2:00 to 4:00 pm for their Annual Easter Egg Hunt! They will have face painting, balloon art, snacks, and an appearance from the Easter Bunny!
FREE: The Special Egg Event is for children with special needs and their families. The fun starts at 3:00 pm and goes until 5:00 pm at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines. Enjoy food, carnival games, activity areas, and egg hunts that are designed for your child.
FREE: Join Warren County Conservation for this family fun event! Older kids (5-10 years old) search for eggs while enjoying a scenic nature hike with their parent/guardian. There will be eggs hidden on the Annett Nature Center property, and each child will receive clues as to where to find them. There will also be a little tykes (4 and below) hunt in the butterfly garden! The egg hunts will begin at 10:30am, please arrive by 10:15am to get checked in and sign in for the raffle.
FREE: The Clive Fire Fighter’s Association is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt in Linnan Park at 9:00 a.m. The Easter Egg Hunt is for children ages 1-10. There will be separate egg hunts for younger kids and older kids. There are special eggs that can be exchanged at the fire station for a prize.
FREE: Join Meredith Drive Reformed Church for their Annual Easter Treasure Hunt at the Bridge in Johnston. Starting at 9:00 am and 10:30 am, this isn’t your typical Easter egg hunt! They don’t focus on bunnies and baskets. At the Easter Treasure Hunt you and your child will participate in crafts and activities that make Jesus Christ the main character of Easter! Children will be grouped according to age, preschool-kindergarten and 1-4th graders. There is no need to bring a basket as they will have ready-made treat bags for everyone!
FREE: Bring your Easter basket, your family and all your friends to Western Gateway Park, downtown Des Moines for The Gateway Church’s 7th Annual Eggs, Eggs Everywhere! From 9:00 am to 12:00 pm kids will be able to hunt for more than 12,000 eggs. After the massive egg hunt, stick around for more family fun with an art station, giant inflatables and face painting.
FREE: Be a part of the 2018 Grimes Easter Eggstravaganza sponsored by the Grimes Countyline Kiwanis at the Grimes Community Complex. The festivities start at 9:00 am and go to Noon. There will be Easter egg hunts for kids and a visit by the Easter Bunny.
Welcome Spring with a day of fun for the whole family! The 1875 town of Walnut Hill comes together to celebrate Easter with ongoing egg and toy hunts (divided by age), horse-drawn wagon rides, egg rolling, pancake flipping, a visit from the Easter bunny, and more. Discounts are available for advanced ticket purchase.
FREE: Co-hosted by the Ames Jaycees, festivities will include an egg hunt for all children 6th grade and younger. The egg hunt will run continuously from 9:00 to 11:00 am, and guests may hunt for eggs at any time. Children will have the opportunity to search for up to five colorful eggs to trade in for a goody bag. Other fun activities include lawn games, storytelling, and meet the Spring Bunny. In case of inclement weather, activities will be moved indoors.
FREE: Kick off the day with the Rotary’s Annual Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 am. Then join in some Easter fun at the Dallas Center Annual Easter Egg Hunt at 10:00 am in Mounds Park. There will be crafts and activities and kids will be able to visit the Easter Bunny and have a photo taken.
FREE: Windsor Heights’ annual Easter egg hunt with 7,000 candy and prize-filled eggs is scheduled for 9:00 am in Colby Park. Ages 5 and under will hunt in the tennis courts, ages 6-9 will hunt in the ball fields, and ages 10-12 will hunt in front of the Community Center. You will also be able to have your photo taken with the Easter Bunny and Ember the Fire Dog. The event will take place rain or shine, so dress accordingly.
FREE: This annual Easter Egg Hunt hosted by the Pleasant Hill Fire Department and Parks & Recreation is for kids 12 and under. The hunt starts at 10:00 am at Doanes Park.
Take the entire family out to the zoo from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm to enjoy a day filled with fun and eggs. ‘Like’ them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter to participate in the Golden Egg Hunt. A daily clue will be given March 25-29 to point you in the right direction of the eggs. Eggstravaganza is FREE with Regular Zoo Admission.
FREE: Join Howell’s at 10:00 am for a fun filled egg hunt on the farm. The Easter Bunny will be there to meet and greet everyone and pose for photos. After the egg hunt, their playground will be open, they will be offering FREE pony rides until noon (weather permitting) and their adorable baby goats will be out and available for holding.
FREE: Join Tinkerbell, Cinderella and Rapunzel at the Ankeny Band Shell (410 SW 1st Street Ankeny, IA 50023) the morning of March 31st for the Royal Easter Egg hunt, presented by DSM FIRST Christian church. This is a FREE event open to the public!
FREE: Tedd’s Garden Center hosts their annual Easter egg Hunt at 10:00 am for kids aged 10 and under. The Easter Bunny hides over 7,000 eggs and stays for the hunt and pictures afterwards. This event typically starts promptly at 10:00 am, don’t be late if you want to make sure your child finds eggs!
FREE: The Great Egg Hunt! hosted by Urbandale Parks and Recreation is for kids ages 10 and under at the Giovannetti Community Shelter. Kids can fill up their baskets with ALL the candy and eggs they see starting at 10:00 am.
FREE: Hop on over to fill your baskets full of candy at Waukee’s annual Easter Egg Hunt! Three age groups get to take off and grab their share of eggs including, 4 years and under, 5-7 and 8-10 years old. The Easter Bunny greets kids in Centennial Park at 10:00 am. Rain or shine.
FREE: Each year, Ankeny First hosts an Easter Egg Hunt for the community on the Saturday before Easter Sunday. The Easter Bunny always attends and is a popular attraction with the children. The egg hunt will start at 10:30 am, for children two years to 4th grade. New this year! There will be a Special Needs Easter Egg Hunt at the Ankeny Aquatics Center Wading Area. Special beeping and magnetic eggs will be provided with prizes. Invite your friends to this community-wide event.
FREE: Join Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines for games, crafts, Easter egg hunts (age 6 and under), inflatables, snacks and photo opportunities, all one hour prior to each of their Saturday Easter services! All kids are welcome!
Make a splash at the Urbandale Pool at their Annual Egg Dive. Go early, this popular event starts at 1:30 pm. Children will be divided into age groups to dive for colored eggs in the pool. Each egg will be turned in for a prize. $6.00 per person entering the pool area; only $1.00 for those with an annual pass.
FREE: Enjoy an afternoon of fun and hunting! Eggs that is…In addition to the egg hunt, there will also be a visit from the Easter Bunny, face painting, prizes and more. The 1-9-year-old hunt starts at 1:30 pm, there will be a performance at 2:00 pm and then the 10+ group will hunt at 2:30 pm.
FREE: It’s raining Easter Eggs at The Indianola Egg Drop! The festivities start at 2:00 pm. 50,000 Easter eggs will be dropped by a hot air balloon onto the field at 4:30 pm. After the eggs are dropped, the canon will sound and the egg hunt is on!! The kids will be divided into three age groups: toddler – preschool, k – 2nd grade, and 3rd – 5th grade. If the weather is not cooperating, they will have a helicopter on stand-by to drop the eggs!
FREE: Join Immanuel United Methodist Church for their annual Easter morning Egg Hunt! The hunt will be hosted in between worship services, so come early or stay after for worship.
