2018 Earth Day Celebrations around Des Moines

Are you ready to go a little green? April is the month to celebrate the Earth, and there are fun, family-friendly events happening throughout the Des Moines metro. Earth Day is April 22 and Arbor Day is April 27, 2018 and below you’ll find a few places where you can give back and say “thank you” to Mother Nature.

Earth Day Trash Bash

Date: Friday, April 20, 2018

Location: Kick-Off is at Cowles Commons, Downtown Des Moines

Earth Day Trash Bash will kick-off at 12:00 noon downtown. The team rally builds a sense of community and cohesiveness to the day’s activities and is an opportunity to recognize the thousands of hours volunteers will put in helping to clean up. After the kick-off bash and lunch, team captains will lead the volunteers out to their project locations for an afternoon of giving back to the community.

Earth Day Craft

Celebrate Earth Day with a craft in the children’s area all day at the Northside Library.

Earth Day – Plant Trees and Park Clean Up

Date: Saturday, April 21, 2018

Location: Walker Johnston Park, Lakeview Park and Walnut Creek Regional Park in Urbandale

Join Urbandale Parks and Recreation for Earth Day and help clean up community parks. They’ve got three sites to choose from this year to help with park clean up.  Register to volunteer at www.Urbandale.org/EarthDay by April 10th (with a team or individually). You can also bring all those old plastic grocery bags you’ve been saving and compete against other metro communities for the most grocery bags collected.

Earth Day

Location: Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge 9981 Pacific St, Prairie City, IA 50228

In honor of Earth Day, the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge invites volunteers to help them restore prairie and oak savanna ecosystems from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. During this event, volunteers will participate in stewardship activities. Groups and individuals are welcome. FREE lunch provided by the Friends of Neal Smith NWR. Pre-registration is required.

Earth Day Park Beautification

Date: Saturday, April 21, 2018

Location: Brown’s Woods Forest Preserve, 465 SE Brown’s Woods Drive, West Des Moines

Kick off Earth Day at 10:00 am in a county park! Help beautify an urban forest preserve and adjacent roadways as we remove litter from Brown’s Woods and along 63rd Street. Wear long pants, sturdy shoes and bring gloves if you have a pair. Coffee, hot cocoa and water will be available – be sure to bring your favorite mug and refillable water bottle! All equipment provided. To register for this event, please email volunteer@polkcountyiowa.gov.

Beautification Blowout

Date: Saturday, April 21, 2018

Location: City of Indianola

Help spruce up Indianola’s parks and miles of walking and bike trails in honor of Earth Day from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Gather a group of friends or family or if you aren’t part of a group you can join one. Your group will be assigned an area that will be your beautification blowout responsibility. Tasks will include removing litter, debris and dead limbs from the trails and parks. Gloves and trash bags will be provided, but it’s strongly recommended that you bring any other tools that might make the tasks easier.  Registration is due by Monday, April 9.

Earth Day Family Fun

Date: Saturday, April 21, 2018

Location: City Hall Pond, 4200 Mills Civic Parkway West Des Moines

Do you love the outdoors or have a great sense of adventure? If so, the Earth Day Family Fun event in West Des Moines could be the perfect FREE event for you! It starts at 10:00 am and goes until 12:00 noon and will be educational and fun for the whole family.  You can go kayaking, canoeing, fishing, create a small paddle boat or relax in an outdoor lounge and enjoy a cup of coffee or cocoa! FREE tree saplings will also be handed out.  Come help West Des Moines Parks & Rec celebrate the EARTH!

Earth Day/Arbor Day- Family Tree Planting

Location: Grimes Sports Complex, 300 South James Street, Grimes

Join the City of Grimes to plant some trees. See first-hand the proper way to plant a tree as you add new trees to City parks. Refreshments will be served. Meet at the Concession Stand by the Playground at the South Grimes Sports Complex on South James Street in Grimes.

Downtown Earth Day Tour

Date: Saturday, April 21, 2018

Location: Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and Science Center of Iowa

Celebrate the sixth annual Downtown Earth Day Tour with the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, Iowa Rivers Revival and the Science Center of Iowa. Enjoy a short walk or bike ride between these three locations and spend the day learning about environmentally friendly practices. Drop-in activities and demonstrations focusing on sustainability and environmental awareness from various community organizations will be offered at each location. Also participate in a selfie contest to try and win family memberships at the Botanical Garden and Science Center! All locations have special activities and tours planned between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Earth Day Bike & Cache

Date: Sunday, April 22, 2018

Location: Chichaqua Valley Trailhead off NE 88th Street (one mile east of Bondurant)

Join Polk County Conservation at 1:00 pm to go on a biking and geocaching adventure! Meet at the Chichaqua Valley Trail and be ready to bike a few miles as you search for geocaches hidden near the trail. FREE. No registration required. Be sure to download the free app “c:geo” or “Geocaching” on your smart phone before you arrive. They will also have GPS units available. Meet at the Trailhead on NE 88th St., south of Hwy 65.

Trees For Kids

Date: Saturday, April 28, 2018

Location: Brenton Arboretum, 25141 260th Street, Dallas Center, IA 50063

Visit Brenton Arboretum to participate in their Trees for Kids program in conjunction with the City of Dallas Center. Starting at 9:00 am, there will be tree planting demonstrations every hour at 9, 10, 11, and 12. Learn how to plant a tree and then take home a FREE oak or hickory tree to plant in your own yard! They will have 200 bare-root trees available from the State Forest Nursery on a first come first serve basis.
