2018 Edition: Family Friendly Things To Do This Labor Day Weekend in Des Moines

Where did the summer go?  It seems like just a few weeks ago, we were finally putting away the snowblower and shovels!  The calendar doesn’t lie, and Labor Day is almost here, the unofficial, last weekend of all that summer is made of. Let the planning begin for your family’s last, big weekend of summer, and make it a memorable one!

Des Moines Jazz Festival

Friday, August 31 – Saturday, September 1, 2018
The third annual Des Moines Jazz Festival is hosted by Civic Music Association and Des Moines Social Club. This year’s lineup is headlined by the all-female New Orleans jazz supergroup, Shake ‘Em Up Jazz Band on Saturday, and Bobby Watson Quartet on Friday, featuring Kansas City saxophone player and jazz legend Bobby Watson, Jr.

Labor Day Celebration in Madrid, IA

Friday, August 31 – Monday, September 3, 2018
Enjoy some small-town fun this Labor Day weekend with a parade, car show, crafts, music and entertainment in Madrid, just a thirty minute drive northwest of Des Moines.

Taste of the Junction Multicultural Festival

Friday, August 31 – Saturday, September 1, 2018
Celebrating the flavor of the Junction, the people, culture and cuisines. Fun for the whole family with inflatables, face painting, food vendors, beer garden and live music.  FREE and open to the public.

Farmers’ Markets

Saturday, September 1, 2018
The Downtown Farmers’ Market, Uptown Ankeny Farmers’ Market, LSI Global Greens Farmers’ Market, Indianola’s Farmers’ Markets and Ted Lare Garden Center Farmers’ Market will be open for business on Saturday.  Stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables to serve at your holiday weekend gatherings.

The Renaissance Faire at Sleepy Hollow

Saturday, September 1 – Monday, September 3, 2018
You’ll go back in time to an era when royalty ruled, knights jousted, and the arts came alive! The theme for Labor Day weekend is Vikings & Shieldmaidens.  Enjoy unique entertainment, merchants, food and drink and more.

Glow Wild at Jester Park

Sunday, September 2, 2018
‘Glow Wild’ with your family at Jester Park. The whole family will enjoy an afternoon and evening of food, fun, environmental education programming, drinks, and live music – all illuminated by an evening bonfire. Justin Hayward – All The Way In Concert

Saturday, September 1, 2018
Justin Hayward’s voice has been heard the world over.  Known principally as the vocalist, lead guitarist and composer for The Moody Blues, his is an enduring talent that has helped to define the times in which he worked. His North American “All The Way” tour with his trio (Mike Dawes and Julie Ragins), includes a stop in Des Moines at Hoyt Sherman — performing material from All The Way, a retrospective of songs from across his career, as well as The Moody Blues favorites.

Live at the Creek

Sunday, September 2, 2018
Enjoy FREE live music at the Jordan Creek Town Center Amphitheater from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. (WRITE) BACK AT ‘CHA will close out the Live at the Creek concert series for the summer.

Saturday, September 1 – Monday, September 3, 2018
Living History Farms will be open throughout the Labor Day Weekend.

Adventureland & Adventure Bay

Saturday, September 1 – Monday, September 3, 2018
Adventureland Park and Adventure Bay will be open weekends only by Labor Day with Adventure Bay closing for the season on Monday, September 3rd.

One Last Dip in the Pool

Saturday, September 1 – Monday, September 3, 2018
A few local pools are still open through the Labor Day Weekend. Altoona Aquatics Park, Cascade Falls Aquatic Center in Ankeny and Northwest Aquatic Center in Des Moines are open for you to take the family out for one last swim!

Blank Park Zoo

Saturday, September 1 – Monday, September 3, 2018
Say goodbye to summer and hello to one last hurrah at the Blank Park Zoo. They will be open during their normal business hours throughout the Labor Day Weekend.

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

Saturday, September 1 – Sunday, September 2, 2018
The Botanical Center will be open their normal hours on Saturday and Sunday but will be CLOSED on Labor Day. On Saturday, September 1st you can join them for one of their Saturday Drop In Programs.

Science Center of Iowa

Saturday, September 1 – Monday, September 3, 2018
The Science Center of Iowa will be open during their normal hours over Labor Day Weekend.  They will host a Star Party at 8:00 pm on Saturday, September 1st and the Mini Maker Faire from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday, September 3rd.

Sports & Recreation

Iowa Cubs vs. Round Rock Express

Friday, August 31 – Monday, September 3, 2018
Cheer on the Cubbies in their final series of the 2018 season. Bring the family to the ballpark for Cubs action and enjoy Friday Night Fireworks, Pre-Game Catch on the Field, Kids Run the Bases and Bike to the Ballpark.

Drake Bulldogs vs. University of South Dakota

Saturday, September 1, 2018
Drake opens their football season with a home game in Drake Stadium against William Jewell.  Kickoff is at 6:00 pm.

Iowa State University vs. South Dakota State

Saturday, September 1, 2018
The Cyclones take on the Jack Rabbits at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.  Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.

Simpson College vs. Bethel University

Saturday, September 1, 2018
The Storm hit the gridiron against the Royals at Buxton Stadium in Indianola at 1:00 pm.

University of Iowa vs. Northern Illinois

Saturday, September 1, 2018
It’s FRYfest! A celebration of all that is Hawkeye. Several events are planned to kick off another Hawkeye football season in Iowa City.
