Summer Reading Programs at Des Moines area Public Libraries
Dates: June 3 – August 4, 2018
Details: The Altoona Public Library Rocks! Their summer reading programs are for kids, birth through 6th grade; teens, grades 6th to 12th and adults. Summer Sign-up Sunday is on June 3rd from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, where you will be able to learn about and sign up for summer programs. They’ll celebrate the end of their program with a Family Pool Party on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at the Altoona Aquatics Center. The Library will also host weekly programs and special events throughout summer.
Dates: May 21 – July 28, 2018
Details: Clive Public Library’s summer theme is Libraries Rock! Reading Programs will be available for infants and toddlers, preschoolers, school aged kids to teens. Kids use journals to track reading progress and one page can be turned in each day to win prizes and attendance to the Big Reading Pool Party on July 28th at the Clive Aquatic Center. If you have a prolific reader they can get Bonus Reading Logs, which are due August 19th.

Details: DMPL’s Summer Reading Challenge is for readers and listeners, ages Birth-12th Grade. All participants earn incentives for time spent reading. Visit any of the branches to sign up. Libraries will also have entertaining programs such as, live entertainment, animal encounters plus book clubs and plenty of creative art projects. Details: The Grimes Public Library is drumming up a fun summer of reading and programming. They will be offering reading challenges, performers, programs, prizes, and lots of fun for babies to adults throughout June and July. Kids, complete your summer reading goals and get invited to an End of Summer Reading Party. Teens can register for their own Teen Summer Reading Finale Party.

Details: “Rock Out” this summer at the Indianola Library. Pick up your reading log beginning May 29th and turn it in by July 28th in order to win prizes and an exclusive ticket to their Pool Party at the Indianola Aquatic Center. The Library also has many weekly programs, special events and story walks for kids to add to the fun. Teens and Tweens can join in FREE special events and contests intended just for them throughout the summer.

Details: The Johnston Public Library’s Summer Reading Program Rocks! Kids can earn prizes this summer by reading and completing early literacy activities and enjoy numerous events for kids of all ages. Sign up at the Youth Services Desk and pick up your reading log.
Details: Read On! and participate in Kirkendall Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. Readers can pick up reading logs and summer calendars and continue to read until you go back to school. The Library will also host a number of events and activities throughout the summer.

Details: Read this summer at the Pleasant Hill Public Library. All ages are welcome. Sign up to earn prizes for reading and enjoy library programs offered throughout the summer. Drawings will be held in August at the end of the program for children, teens, and adults.

Details: Summer Rocks in Urbandale! 2018 Summer Reading Logs can be picked up starting on June 2nd. Count the pages you read this summer to earn books and other special prizes. They will also be hosting many free activities and events throughout June and July.
Details: Waukee Public Library’s summer reading challenge is for children, teens and adults. Reading logs can be picked up at the Library. Once completed, readers earn small, individual rewards. At the end of the program all completed reading logs go into a grand prize drawing.

Details: It’s time to R-O-C-K at the West Des Moines Public Library! All ages (0-adult) are invited to join their 2018 Summer Reading Club: Libraries Rock! Enter contests to win prizes and hit the high note when you meet your reading goals then score an invitation to their final party on Saturday, July 28. Pick up your reading log in the library or register and print online starting Monday, May 21. “It’s easy as ABC.” [mic drop].
Summer Reading Programs at Des Moines area Businesses and Beyond
Dates: April 26 – July 25, 2018
Details: Sync is AudioFile’s summer reading program. It is a FREE summer audiobook program for teens 13+. Starting April 26, 2018, SYNC will give away two complete audiobook downloads a week – pairs of high interest titles, based on weekly themes. Audiobooks will be downloaded through the OverDrive app.
Dates: May 15 – September 3, 2018
Details: The Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program is here to help kids on their way, encouraging them to read books of their own choosing and earn a FREE book, simply by following these three easy steps:
- Read any eight books this summer and record them in the Summer Reading Journal (English or Español). Tell them which part of the book is your favorite, and why.
- Bring the completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between May 15th and September 3rd, 2018.
- Choose a FREE reading adventure from the book list featured on the back of the journal.
Details: Children can earn 10 FREE tokens once they’re read every day for two full weeks. Download their Reading Rewards Calendar and other reward charts on their website. Mark the days off with a pen or sticker as your child accomplishes their reading goals. Take the completed calendar to a participating Chuck E. Cheese’s and receive the free tokens.
Dates: June & July, redeem by August 30, 2018
Details: Kids 14 and under read 15 minutes a day for a month in June and July. (Grown-ups may read aloud to kids who are still learning.) Complete the reading log provided on their website to track minutes. Once your child has read 300 or more minutes, take the log to a local HPB to claim their Bookworm Bucks on or before August 30, 2018.

Details: Enjoy a “Magical Summer of Reading” with Scholastic. The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is open to students in all U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia for 18 weeks. To participate, students must be registered by an educator, meaning a teacher, public librarian or community organization leader. Once registered, students will receive a username and password from their educator, librarian or community organization leader to log into scholastic.com/summer, and begin logging their summer reading minutes. Students can unlock digital rewards as they complete weekly reading challenges.
Dates: Now – June 30, 2018
Details: Sylvan’s reading program called Book Adventure is a FREE reading incentive program for K-8 students. Kids create an on-line account, read books, take a comprehension quiz and earn points. They redeem points for prizes. This reading program will come to an end on June 30, 2018.
