In honor of Grandparents Day next Sunday we thought we would come up with a few fun low-key activities that the grans can experience together. We’ve found some of the best opportunities for the multi-generational family members to enjoy in Des Moines this fall. Read on for five fun and low-key activities for all ages.

Take a Cooking Class

The Machine Shed in Urbandale offers FREE monthly cooking classes for kids.  On Tuesday, September 8th; measure and mix, use kitchen gadgets, follow recipes, learn etiquette, safety and nutrition. Call to register at (515) 270-6818 in advance. (Second Tuesday of each month, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, FREE.)

Ride a Train

Spend a Day Out with Thomas the Train as he chugs into the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad this month. Grandparents and grandkids alike will enjoy an afternoon train ride.  In addition to the train ride, several stations entertain guests including a Storytelling and Video Viewing area, Temporary Tattoos of Island of Sodor friends, and an Imagination Station with Arts & Crafts. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet Sir Topham Hatt, the Controller of the Railway on the Island of Sodor. (September 19th-20th and 25th – 27th; Train leaves on the hour; Tickets are $19.00)

Go on a Wagon Ride

Fans of a more simple way to celebrate fall should hop in the car and visit Jester Park Equestrian Center. They offer wagon rides where little ones and elders can watch out for deer and enjoy the beautiful colors of Iowa’s autumn leaves. The trail ends at the Center’s pumpkin patch where kiddos can point out the biggest, orangest, ripest pumpkin before heading back. (October 1st – November 30th Weekends; 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm;

Check out the New Exhibits

This fall the Science Center of Iowa will host not one, but TWO traveling exhibits.  Math gets moving and so will you in the fast-paced, hands-on exhibit Geometry Playground.  Rethink the science and sociology of race in the thought provoking exhibit RACE: Are We So Different? (Both exhibits open this October; Monday-Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday 12:00 -5:00 pm; Both exhibits will be included with admission.)

See a Play

Grandparents can sit down, take a load off and enjoy the magic of theater with their favorite little ones. The Des Moines Playhouse presents Junie B. Jones, The Musical.  Sneak a peek into the Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal of the outspoken and lovable Junie B. Jones. (October 23rd –November 15th, 2015; Fridays 7:00 pm, Saturday and Sundays 1:00 & 4:00 pm; Tickets start at $15.00 and are available at the box office, by phone or online.)
