Youths ages 12-17 can attend Art in the Garden classes at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. After exploring the Botanical Garden for a flower or leaf subject, participants will focus on the details and create a large-scale pastel work inspired by Georgia O’Keefe. The registration deadline for this class is October 6th.

Screen 11 short, independent, international films geared for young audiences at the Des Moines Art Center. The Kids Film Festival starts at 1:30 pm and kids will also be able to make their own bunny mask and vote for their favorite film.

The Science Center of Iowa will be open on Columbus Day. (They’re typically closed on Mondays in the fall and winter.) Check out the new Wild Music: Sounds & Songs of Life Exhibit. Through sensory-stimulating activities, you’ll not only hear the music that surrounds you every day, but you’ll see and even feel it, too.

Visit the Christopher Columbus Memorial located on the south lawn of the Iowa State Capitol Complex. The Italian-American community in Iowa donated this monument to the state in 1938. It was financed by individual contributions. A bronze bust of Columbus, the Italian discoverer of America, rests between classical granite pillars.

The mission of the Italian American Cultural Center of Iowa is to promote, preserve and provide education about all aspects of the rich Italian-American culture to the Des Moines metropolitan area and the State of Iowa. The Center is open on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 pm and on Sundays from 3:00 to 5:00 pm or by appointment.
