8 STEM Summer Camps and Classes 4 Kids in Des Moines

We are continuing our series of articles on summer camp options for kids in Des Moines.  Today we will be concentrating on day camps and classes that focus on STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  STEM camps aren’t exactly new, but this year, it seems, like Des Moines families have more choices for kids interested in STEM activities than ever before.  Here are eight STEM summer camps and classes for kids in Des Moines:

Camp Invention

Camp Invention is a national organization that offers a number of camps throughout the summer to kids entering first through sixth grade.  Camp Invention features collaborative learning opportunities led by local teachers in a safe environment. Programs are being offered in Adel, Ankeny, Johnston, Pleasant Hill, Urbandale, Waukee and Windsor Heights.  Pre-registration is required.

Details:  Camps are offered in June and July and are from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.  The cost of the week long camp ranges from $220.00 to $240.00, depending on where you enroll.

Iowa State University

The Office of Precollegiate Programs for Talented and Gifted (OPPTAG) at Iowa State University offer three summer programs for advanced students.  Programs include: Adventures – for students entering third through sixth grade; Adventures – for students entering seventh through eighth grades and Explorations – for students entering ninth through eleventh grade.  OPPTAG strives to offer challenging academic experiences that incorporate hands-on experimentation and provide students with experiences not found in the traditional classroom.

Location: Iowa State University Campus, Ames, IA

Details: There is a nonrefundable application fee for all OPPTAG summer programs.  This fee is not applied to the cost of the program.  Adventures for 3rd through 6th graders costs $200; Adventures for 7th and 8th graders costs $450; and Explorations costs $750 per week, which includes tuition, housing, dining, activities, materials and books.  A commuter option and financial aid are available.  Please visit OPPTAG’s website for more detailed information.

Mad Science of Central Iowa

Mad Science summer camps and vacation programs balance learning and fun with interactive and hands-on science activities. Children have the opportunity to become junior scientists for the summer and embark on a series of science adventures.  Programs are offered in partnership with schools and local municipalities.

Details:  Programs have varying costs and hours.  Registration is required.

Science Center of Iowa

The Science Center of Iowa offers a number of STEM camps for students in Pre-K through eighth grade.  From creating chemical concoctions to studying the science of flight, SCI’s week-long camp experiences will inspire budding scientists.  You can register for classes: on-line, by phone, mail or in person.

Location: 401 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Des Moines, Iowa, 50309

Details:  SCI Summer Camps are offered June through August.  Morning camps run from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon; afternoon camps run from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Half day camp starts at $98.00 for members and $118.00 for nonmembers.  Full day camp starts at $196 for half day camp and $236.00 for nonmembers.  All campers receive a t-shirt with registration for a full-day camp. Sylvan Learning Center

Whether your child is interested in a robotics camp, a video game design camp, or a cool study edge camp, Sylvan’s STEM camps are designed to be fun and interactive. Full and half-day camps are available at Sylvan Learning Centers in Johnston and Des Moines during the summer, as well as during winter and spring breaks.  Sylvan’s summer STEM camps are offered to kids in second through sixth grade.  They also offer Academic camps.

Details: STEM camps are scheduled Monday – Thursday.  Half-day camps cost $225.00 and full day camp costs $350.00.  You must contact the learning center to register.

Urbandale Community Education

Urbandale Community Education is offering STEM classes to kids entering third through twelfth grades at Urbandale High School.  Classes are in June and July and topics include: Solar Town, basic wind experiments, bubble bonanza, MacGyver Windmill and safe removal of an invasive species.

Locations:  7111 Aurora Ave, Urbandale, IA 50322

Details:  Registration is required for all classes which cost between $15.00 and $20.00.  The classes are scheduled in late afternoon, and last an hour to an hour and a half for four days.  Find registration requirements on their website.

Youth Tech, Inc.

Created in Iowa but located in Kansas, Youth Tech, Inc. offers a number of courses by partnering with local schools and community colleges.  A few of the courses in their catalog include: Multi-Media Adventures, Robotics. Web Design, 3D Animation, Game Design and Movie Makers.  Classes are offered to kids ages seven to seventeen June through August.  Classes are being offered this summer in Ankeny, Urbandale, Waukee and West Des Moines.

Details: Classes are three hours in length and last four days.  Registration fees start at $150.00 and vary depending on the class and number of students that are enrolled.

Youth Organizations

Many youth organizations such as 4-H, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire also offer STEM camps.  If your children already participate in one of these programs, be sure to check out what STEM camps and classes that they offer.
