Beer Spots Where Kids are Welcome in Des Moines

Oktoberfest, the world’s most famous beer festival, takes place every year in Munich in September and October.  Whether you will be celebrating Octoberfest or not, it’s a great time to enjoy an icy mug of beer. Even parents can enjoy kicking back a frosty brew with a wave of breweries and restaurants catering to kids of all ages.  It’s no longer taboo to see suds and sippies side by side. Read on for the top spots to enjoy a cold one with the little squirt in tow in Des Moines.

Hessen Haus

101 4th Street • Des Moines, IA 50309 • (515) 288-2520 • http://www.hessenhaus.com/

Hessen Haus is Oktoberfest headquarters here in Des Moines.  If you’ve never had a taste of traditional German fare here, you’re missing out. Kids will have a fun time just saying the names of each dish. Parents will love that Hessen Haus has a LARGE selection of German Biers.  Have a boot of beer, pass it around (maybe not to the kids:) and listen to some polka!

High Life Lounge

200 SW 2nd Street • Des Moines, IA 50309 • (515) 280-1965 • http://thehighlifelounge.com/

Step back in time and introduce your kids to what it was like to hang out in your parent’s basement.  Children are welcome and there is something on the menu for everyone in the fam.  Can you say bacon wrapped tater tots?  Plus, the beer selection is extensive and reasonably priced. A win-win if you ask us.The space is not that large and fills up fast, so I suggest you go early or go for lunch.

Hy-Vee Market Grille

Multiple Locations • https://www.hy-veemarketgrille.com/store/

Beer loving parents rejoice! Hy-Vee Market Grille is a place where families can go to enjoy each other’s company and a pint of local, handcrafted beer. This is one of our daughter’s favorite places to eat.  She loves the popovers they serve before the meal and their mac n’ cheese.  We (the Ps) love their large selection of tap beers.

The Other Place

12401 University Avenue • Clive, IA 50325 • (515) 225-9494 • http://theotherplace.com/

If you’re a sports fan, you might like the fact that there are numerous big screens at The Other Place. We also enjoy sitting out on their patio.  We order pizza regularly when dining here and the kids also love several of the Kids Menu items and their “smiley face” fries.  Be sure to check out their daily food and drink specials.

Rookies Sports Bar & Grill

2180 NW 156th Street • Clive, IA 50325 • (515) 987-0093 • http://gorookies.com/

Another sports bar, this homey neighborhood bar offers a simple kid’s menu with all of the staples.  For the parents, they have a great selection of local and regional craft beers, premium beers, seasonal flavors and more.  Rookies Sports Bar & Grill is a great place for an early Saturday night dinner or late Sunday lunch.
