Brunch Bunch: Our Favorite Family Brunch Spots in Des Moines

Spring time always makes us want to head out for a great brunch.  Between Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and the warmer weather, it’s one of our favorite meals to eat out.  Bonus, many of the more upscale restaurants in Des Moines serve amazing brunches and are more kid friendly in the morning.  Think french toast and well rested children!   Here are a few of our favorite kid-friendly brunch spots in Des Moines.

Django

1420 Locust Steeet • Des Moines, IA 50309 • (515) 288-0268

Django focuses on serving French cuisine in a comfortable atmosphere.  Brunch is served Sundays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and includes a nice blend of breakfast and lunch items, including favorites like omelets and crepes. They also have a nice kid’s brunch menu, which my kids usually order French toast with bacon off of.  We bring leftovers home, because it’s HUGE!  My mom, dad and I typically order a Bloody Mary, which comes with a small meal as a garnish!  Kids Brunch Menu $3.00 to $6.00 for entrees; Regular Brunch Menu $5.99 to $16.99 for entrees.

Louie’s Wine Dive

1378 Hickman Road • Waukee, IA • 50263 (515) 518-2075

Known for serving up fresh cuisine in a relaxed and comfortable neighborhood-style setting, Louie’s Wine Dive brunch is not going to disappoint. Brunch is served on both Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Kids can order up French Toast al a Louie or The Boulder Way (granola, fruit and yogurt) and Mom and Dad can order a Ruby Red Mimosa or Bacon Bloody Mary with their omelette.  Regular Brunch Menu $6.00 to $13.00 for entrees.

Machine Shed

11151 Hickman Road, Urbandale, IA 50322 (515) 270-6818

Just off the interstate in Urbandale, the Machine Shed has a buffet brunch on Saturday and Sundays from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.  On Easter, Sunday brunch will run from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.  You can also order off of their menu. Buffets are a great option for kids, usually even the pickiest of eaters can find something to eat and they can be served quickly. The real draw to the Machine Shed for my “city” kids however, is getting to ride in a wagon pulled by a tractor around the parking lot.  Buffet is $12.50 per person.

Malo

900 Mulberry St Des Moines, IA 50309 515.244.5000

Malo has a fantastic brunch on Sundays  from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The chocolate fountain with tons of goodies to dip in it is always a big hit with our kids.  They also have a taco bar, omelets and a Bloody Mary Bar. It’s housed in the Des Moines Social Club, which is good for pre- or post-brunch entertainment and the building is huge if you’ve got a little one that needs to get up and run around a bit.  Buffet is $16.99 per person.
