Public Tour @ The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates

HE WORLD FOOD PRIZE HALL OF LAUREATES tells a story in every room – from the building’s rich history as the Des Moines public library, to the Foundation’s celebrated agricultural and humanitarian pioneers there is something for every visitor.

Built in 1903, this century-old building has been restored into a museum that celebrates those who have dedicated their lives to fighting hunger around the world. The Hall of Laureates is a beautiful space of learning and collaboration, and we welcome you to visit.

The Hall is open to the public on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Admission is free of charge, and visitors have the opportunity to take a guided tour or explore the building on their own. Private and group tours are also available.

Explore the exciting world of electricity! Experience hair-raising fun with a Van de Graaff generator, watch as you become electrons and atoms, and see what happens when electricity meets a pickle!

Music on the Plaza @ Civic Plaza

People of all ages are welcome to mingle in Altoona and enjoy some FREE music on Friday nights from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The concerts are at the Civic Plaza next to Hy-Vee. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on.   Food and drink items are available for purchase from several local vendors.

Pedaler’s Jamboree @ Chichaqua Valley Trail

The Pedaler’s Jamboree is a music festival created for bicycle riders and non-riders alike! Get a ticket for a weekend bicycle ride full of adventure or a non-rider ticket for the main stage festivities in Bondurant on August 26th. We will be visiting the Chichaqua Valley Trail (CVT) and it’s communities in 2017.  This year is the 30th anniversary of the CVT!

For non-riders with ticket passes to the overnight destination at the Bondurant Recreational Sports Complex(2050 Jr Haines Pkwy, Bondurant, IA), gates open at 3 pm on Saturday, August 27th. Camping will also be available at this same location. Non-Rider tickets will be available at Ira and Mingo in addition to Bondurant.

Bicyclists depart on the morning of Saturday, August 26th from the trailhead in Baxter, IA. Drop off your overnight packs at check in and prepare for a weekend of relaxed bike riding, music, and fun. The trail encompasses a wide range of landscapes, from wooded stretches, prairies, rivers and farmland. Stop at your convenience at a handful of locations to enjoy live music and entertainment. Bands will play throughout the day in communities across the trail.

The final destination will host the feature event with main stage music. Overnight camping is included for all registered riders! Hotel/motel accommodations are available  in Altoona, IA (stay tuned for shuttle details). There will be food available at restaurants throughout Bondurant as well as food vendors at the campground/music area.

The following day (Sunday, August 27), riders will return to to Baxter, IA on the trail. Music and festivities will continue to rock until riders complete the ride at the end of the day on Sunday.

Daily riding distances:
Saturday: 22 miles
Sunday: 22 miles

Compilation CD (with artist from this year’s event), Gear (2 bags) Transport to campsite (not hotels), Sag Support, Camping, Music and Entertainment, more amenities in the works – Free weekend trail pass on the trail.

Free bus shuttle from the Park to the hotels in Altoona: There will be a free bus shuttle for registered participants from the music area to hotels starting at 4 pm on Saturday and ending at 11 pm. The bus will make a loop around town starting and finishing at the park. The next morning the bus will pick up patrons at the hotels starting at 7 am and ending at 9 am. Riders will need to pick up their gear at the park and transport it with them to the hotels. It will need to be dropped off at the designated pick up zone on Sunday morning by 10 am for transport back to the start.

Join us every Saturday for these brand new educational opportunities! Stop by on the first Saturday of the month and visit the Pop-Up Demos, where Botanical Garden staff and volunteers will give demonstrations and field questions on unique botanical topics. Wanting to know more about the history and changes of the Botanical Garden? Join us second Saturdays for a drop-in tour. On third Saturdays, come see the Iowa Bonsai Association in action as they work on specimens and field questions about the art of bonsai. For a hands-on experience, we invite you to join us on the fourth Saturday of the month to create a botanically inspired craft.

Free Flicks @ Des Moines Parks

Free Flicks is a summer-long series of outdoor movie showings throughout the Des Moines area. The films will be shown on a 25-foot portable screen, and will begin after sunset around 9:00 p.m. Admission is free, blankets and lawn chairs are encouraged. People are free to bring their own snacks as concessions will not be provided for purchase.

The Des Moines Jazz Festival @ Des Moines Social Club
