Yoga in the Park @ Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden

Des Moines Parks and Recreation and UnityPoint Health-Des Moines invite you to enjoy your Saturday mornings by participating in a free weekly yoga session. Free outdoor yoga classes start June 1 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at the Clare and Miles Mills Rose Garden in Greenwood-Ashworth Park. Classes run every Saturday from June 1 to September 30.

The classes, taught by volunteer instructors from around the Metro Area, are perfect for all skill levels, from curious beginner to advanced yogi. You are encouraged to bring a mat or a towel as well as some water and clothes you can move in. No registration for the class is required, just show up ready to relax, release and enjoy.  For ages 8+.

Classes will not take place in the event of rain. We will only post on social media if Yoga is cancelled. Please continue to check our Facebook and Twitter for cancellations.

Public Night @ Ashton Observatory

Dark skies and the Milky Way reign over Ashton Observatory every clear night, waiting for us all to seek them out. From April through October members of the Des Moines Astronomical Society open Ashton Observatory to the public each Saturday evening. We are delighted to share the majesty of the night sky with you!

The first Saturday of each month is pure stargazing. The other Saturdays of each month offer a classroom program from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m., followed by stargazing after that.

All Ashton Public Nights are free admission.  Your free-will donations will help keep Ashton Observatory open.

 

Saturday Public Nights stop during July, mainly due to late sunset times – full darkness doesn’t begin until after 10:00 pm. If sky conditions are good, some DMAS members might be present on July Saturdays, but no regular programs will be provided.

Join us for an fun hour of drama! Come to one session or come to all! Open to any student, Spectrum Stories is a theatre class experience designed for the unique interests and needs of students on the autism spectrum. Through storytelling, creative play, social interaction and non-verbal communication, your student can work on social skills, flexible thinking, self-expression, empathy for others and self-confidence. Siblings and friends are welcome as well. Pre-registration online at dmplayhouse.com is encouraged but drop-ins are also welcome!

An additional emergency contact form is available at the door specifically for those who tend to elope. Parents are asked to remain in the building during class time, and may accompany their child into class if they wish.

Summer Family Night @ Des Moines Art Center

Bring the whole family and join us in the studio for a special series of summer art classes! Explore a variety of activities for all ages and work at your own pace. Take a family-friendly tour of the museum at 6 pm or 6:30 pm. Register in advance for a discounted rate.

6/20 – ZOO + ME
Create art inspired by animals from around the world. Visit the museum to find animals in our collection, and meet some friendly animals from the Blank Park Zoo!

7/18 – SUMMER OF SHAPES
Explore abstract art in the museum and create a variety of abstract artworks of your own using shapes, colors, patterns, and lines and exploring movement, emotion, and pattern.

8/15 – ACTIVE ART
Act out your art through art games, energetic art stations, and whole body art exercises. Visit the museum to see action in art.

9/28 – EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING
Create a unique collaborative canvas while learning fun techniques in painting. Create a stencil to cover part of your canvas, then get messy painting with nontraditional tools, splash and splatter paint, and explore gravity while painting with a pendulum.
