Art Night Out @ Special Events Center Clive Aquatic Center

Participants will discover a variety of ways to make art and engage in the ideasthat art expresses. We’ll include an assortment of media including: drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. As your elementary age artist develops, they can try a variety and discover what their favorites are. Collaborative opportunities create a support system. The span of ages invites mentoring experiences that bring the children together to learn from not only the instructor, but each other about making art. Art club is a safe and secure community for self expression and respecting ideas. Students ideas can be heard as they develop themes related to their interests and make art representing those themes.

Yoga in the Park @ Gray's Lake Park

Des Moines Parks and Recreation and UnityPoint Health-Des Moines invite you to enjoy your Saturday mornings by participating in a free weekly yoga session at Gray’s Lake Park. Freeoutdoor yoga classes start June 2 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on the southeast lawn of Gray’s Lake and will continue every Saturday through September 29.

The classes, taught by volunteer instructors from around the Metro Area, are perfect for all skill levels, from curious beginner to advanced yogi. You are encouraged to bring a mat or a towel as well as some water and clothes you can move in. No registration for the class is required, just show up ready to relax, release and enjoy.

Classes will not take place in the event of rain. We will only post on social media if Yoga is cancelled. Please continue to check our Facebook and Twitter for cancellations.

Gray’s Lake Park is easily accessible via Des Moines’ extensive trail network. Due to the popularity of the program, we encourage participants to walk, run or bike to Yoga.

Monarch Tagging @ Various Parks

As part of Monarch education and conservation, tagging events will be held at various parks. Learn about Monarch Butterflies and their migration patterns then help tag some butterflies. Monarchs will be captured, tagged with a special identification sticker and released to continue on their journey. The event is free and no registration is required. Everyone is invited to join in and help.

Afternoon at the Ranch @ Camp Hantesa - Herman's Ranch

We invite children in 3rd grade and older to come spend the afternoon at Camp Hantesa’s Herman’s Ranch and learn all about horses! English riding lessons and horse science, grooming, saddling, and care are all included in each session. Then while on the horse, participate in ring activities and games that teach riding skill. Each time you participate, you will learn more about handling and caring for a horse. Please wear jeans or long pants and dress for the weather. Transportation is provided from the drop sites below. (Ages 3-8)

Cost: $35/session

Family Workshops @ Greater Des Moines Botanical Center

These classes are the perfect opportunity for families to have a creative experience at the Botanical Garden. These hands-on workshops are designed for youth ages 4-14 and an adult to build a take-home project together. Please note one adult is required for every three youth participants. Registration required.

Terrariums Friday, Aug. 3, 1-2:15 p.m.

Experience one of our most popular classes as you learn how to care for and build your own small-scale ecosystem to take home.

Nature Weaving Saturday, Sept. 22, 1-2:15 p.m.

Use plants, grasses and other natural materials to weave a miniature loom and then take home your beautiful botanical tapestry.

Carnivorous Plant Terrariums Friday, Oct. 26, 10:30-11:45 a.m.

Insect-eating plants, oh my! Learn about carnivorous plants and their bizarre adaptations for survival. Then plant and decorate your own spooky terrarium to take home.

Homemade Pumpkin Pie Tuesday, Nov. 13, 5:30-6:45 p.m.

You and your child will prepare this classic dessert from the perfect crust to the delicious fresh filling. Master the art of pie making for the holiday season and take home a pie to enjoy.

Join us for an afternoon of skill building at Camp Hantesa! Try something new or get a refresher on some of our favorite outdoor pursuits. Each day will include introductory instruction by Camp Fire’s professional staff and the chance to practice new skills with games and other activities!
