First Friday New Orleans Jazz Party @ Des Moines Social Club

The NOLA Jazz Band’s monthly “New Orleans Jazz Party” occurs every First Friday of the month at The Basement, usually to a packed house.

All band members have a common love for the sound and “feel” of both traditional and current New Orleans and roots blues music – real, gutsy, raw, heartfelt, and entertaining. They also find joy in their music and love performing together, having fun, and entertaining their audiences.

The NOLA Jazz Band has played alongside a number of well-known traditional jazz and music groups this past year including Davina & the Vagabonds, Sony recording artist trumpet player and singer Bria Skonberg, and Dom Flemons of The Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Individual band members have also shared the stage with Vincent Gardner, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Kurt Elling, and many other well know jazz artists during their careers. NOLA Jazz Band members have also been inducted into the Iowa Jazz Hall of Fame, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

SYBARITE5 brings its eclectic repertoire to Des Moines for our 2018/2019 Season Finale concert. This adventurous string quintet bridges genre gaps and brings unlikely musical combinations together to create unique concert experiences. SYBARITE5 enjoys a well-earned reputation for challenging perceptions of what music can be and who plays what, pushing the boundaries of concert music. Everything In Its Right Place is a cohesive showcase of the ensemble’s regular playlist, including music by Radiohead, Piazzolla, Mozart, and Brubeck, as well as new compositions for the group by Andy Ahiko, Eric Byers, Shawn Conly, and Dan Visconti.

Katie Thiroux Trio @ Temple for Performing Arts

A triple threat talent, Katie Thiroux has garnered considerable attention for her bravura bass playing, assured singing and compelling compositions. With the release of her debut album, Introducing Katie Thiroux (2015)her substantial gifts as a bandleader and recording artist are now also on view. Audiences and critics agree as this release received many awards including “Debut Record of the Year” from the Huffington Post, All About Jazz, Jazz Journalists Association and “Top 5 Debut Records of the Year” from NPR Jazz Critics Poll.   Lending contemporary flair to mainstream stylings, Thiroux carries on the hard swinging tradition of such bass masters as Ray Brown and John Clayton, while channeling the buoyant vocal finesse of iconic singers including Anita O’Day, Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerald. Thiroux offers in-the-moment jazz that draws upon the rich history of the music, from swing to bebop and beyond.

Please note: only children age 5 and over with tickets will be allowed into the theater for this production.
