GPS Pot of Gold Hunt @ MacRae Park

Participants will learn how to use a handheld Global Positioning Unit then use the GPS to find hidden “gold coins” in the park. With a little leprechaun luck along the way, they will also find some information about the wildlife that calls MacRae Park home. Move at your own pace and see if you can find the hidden treasures that MacRae Park has to offer. Pre-registration is required.

Mother and Son Fun Night @ Pioneer Columbus Community Recreation Center

Join us Saturday, March 7 and get your adrenaline going at this highly charged event hosted at Pioneer Columbus Community Recreation Center (2100 SE 5th Street). This event provides an evening of Mother and Son bonding experiences through interactive play. Enjoy live animals from the Blank Park Zoo, choose a game in the video gaming truck, compete on our inflatable obstacle course, enjoy a live magician, make a special take home project for mom with the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, get your face painted, meet members of the Des Moines Police, say hi to the K-9 unit dog, tour a Fire truck with the Firemen, box with the police PAL Boxing Club instructors, test your sports skills and play lazer tag. When you run out of fuel get a piece of pizza and a drink get ready for more action. Any parents, relatives, guardians and/or role models are welcome to attend this event with children.

Give back, clean-up and find the “cached” prizes. Join us Easter weekend to go on a fun family eco hunt. City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation, Iowa Geocacher’s Association, Westwood Neighborhood Association, Walnut Creek Watershed Coalition, and other concerned citizens invite you on our unique hunt for trash. Help improve our creeks and central Iowa’s water quality! Volunteers will be wading through the creek, or walking along the trails collecting litter, tires, and looking for the GIANT plastic eggs, with a prize in each! Trash bags, grabbers, and gloves will be provided. We have a limited amount of waders, so please bring your own! Pre-registration is required.

Mayor’s Annual Ride and Run for Trails @ Principal Park

Join Des Moines Park and Recreation on Saturday, April 18, 2020 for the 33rd Mayor’s Annual Ride and Run. This serves as a fundraiser to support Des Moines trails. The 20+ mile ride will start at Principal Park (1 Line Drive). In addition, there will be a 5K run and 1-mile family fun walk. The run will start at 8 a.m. with the ride at 10 a.m. Travel through many area neighborhoods using the wonderful trail system throughout Des Moines before ending back at Principal Park.

Registration fees are $35 per adult before April 18 and $50 on site the day of the event. Youth ages 5-18 are $5 and children 4 and younger are free. Registration includes a breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., refreshments at the rest stop and a repair van. Registration packets can be picked up onsite the day of the event.
