Sensory Friendly Hours @ Science Center of Iowa

Sensory Friendly Hours provide a quieter, less crowded SCI experience for families with children on the autism spectrum.

The Science Center of Iowa is an exciting place, bustling with sights and sounds… but one Saturday morning each month, we provide a quieter, less crowded visit for Sensory Friendly Hours!

Families with children on the autism spectrum or children with sensory processing disorders will enjoy exploring the Science Center of Iowa with the help of Sensory Guide signage, which indicates audio, visual and activity stimuli.

Sensory Friendly Hours are the first Saturday of the month from 8:30–10:00 am, October through May.

Admission is free, and no advance tickets are required. Simply check in at the Box Office when you arrive!

Young children need a caring adult to share their early STEM experiences, and Pint Size Science classes provide opportunities for young children and their parent or caregiver to learn together. This interactive classroom experience offered September through May allows young explorers ages 3 to 5 to discover the world around them through fun, hands-on activities.

Family STEM Institute @ Science Center of Iowa

Lead your family in STEM learning!

The Science Center of Iowa’s Family STEM Institute helps parents lead their families in educational learning by incorporating science, technology, engineering and math into their daily lives.

Led by early childhood experts from the SCI Preschool, the classes are designed for parents with children ages 0 to 8, with some activities taking place together and some breakout activities for children and parents.

Upcoming Classes:

  • Classifying Creatures — Tuesday, December 4, 5:30–7:30 pm
    Invesitgate Iowa’s animals, and learn how you can turn small moments (like an encounter with an animal) into an exiting learning experience.
  • Exploring Engineering — Thursday, February 28, 5:30–7:30 pm
    This workshop is all about engineering!  Learn how you can use hands-on experiences – like playing 3-D shapes, building LEGO bricks and using measurement tools – to teach your child how to think like an engineer.
  • Bits & Bots — Tuesday, April 16, 5:30–7:30 pm
    Introduce your child to the fundamentals of programming, robotics and coding, and explore the ways you can incorporate bits and bots into your child’s daily life.

Registration: Registration for one adult and one child is $25 ($15 for SCI Members). Additional children or adults are $10 each. Children under 3 are free, and childcare is available.

Downtown Earth Day Tour @ Downtown Des Moines

Celebrate Earth Day at the Downtown Earth Day Tour, a collaboration between the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, the Science Center of Iowa and Iowa Rivers Revival.

Attendees are encouraged to go green, using the trail system and Principal Riverwalk to walk or bike between locations. View map.

Pint Size Science: Toddler Edition @ Science Center of Iowa

Pint Size Science and Toddler Edition classes are designed to reflect current brain research, which shows that academic learning is directly connected to emotion. Young children need a caring adult to share their early STEM experiences, and Pint Size Science classes provide opportunities for young children and their parent or caregiver to learn together. Classes are led by SCI’s Science Learning Team and feature hands-on activities to spark curiosity an wonder through play.

Pint Size Science

This interactive classroom experience offered September through May allows young explorers ages 3 to 5 to discover the world around them through fun, hands-on activities.

Class Times: Classes are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:15 am and 10:30 am. Classes last approximately 45 minutes. Registration opens August 6.

Pint Size Science: Toddler Edition

Toddler Edition classes use hands-on, sensory activites to engage young explorers ages 20 months to 3 in science topics.

Class Times: Toddler Edition classes are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:15 am. Classes last approximately 45 minutes. Registration opens August 6.

New for 2018-2019: Classes are set-up as a three-month series related to the same topic. Registration for all classes in a session is not required, though it is encouraged!

Classifying Creatures Series
Investigate real Iowa animals and what they need to survive. Learn about animal parts and how they can be sorted by their characteristics.

  • Session 2: October 10 & 13
  • Session 3: November 14 & 17

Exploring Engineering Series
Explore 3-D shapes and how they fit together to create structures. Use LEGO to participate in design challenges and use different types of measurement tools.

  • Session 3: February 13 & 16

Bits and Bots Series
Discover cause and effect while learning about the fundamentals of programming. Be introduced to simple rovbotics and coding.
