This interactive classroom experience offered September through May allows young explorers ages 3 to 5 to discover the world around them through fun, hands-on activities.

Toddler Edition classes use hands-on, sensory activites to engage young explorers ages 20 months to 3 in science topics.

SCI is experiencing a season of space exploration! From common astronomical occurrences to rare cosmic phenomena, join us to learn about our solar system and beyond.

Experience the out-of-this-world space observation! Join SCI staff and members of the Des Moines Astronomical Society (DMAS) to take a look through high-powered telescopes and get a quick lesson on the basics of telescope operation. Sensory Friendly Hours provide a quieter, less crowded SCI experience for families with children on the autism spectrum.

The Science Center of Iowa is an exciting place, bustling with sights and sounds… but one Saturday morning each month, we provide a quieter, less crowded visit for Sensory Friendly Hours!

Families with children on the autism spectrum or children with sensory processing disorders will enjoy exploring the Science Center of Iowa with the help of Sensory Guide signage, which indicates audio, visual and activity stimuli.

Sensory Friendly Hours are the first Saturday of the month from 8:30–10:00 am, October through May.

Admission is free, and no advance tickets are required. Simply check in at the Box Office when you arrive!

Lead your family in STEM learning!

The Science Center of Iowa’s Family STEM Institute helps parents lead their families in educational learning by incorporating science, technology, engineering and math into their daily lives.

Led by early childhood experts from the SCI Preschool, the classes are designed for parents with children ages 0 to 8, with some activities taking place together and some breakout activities for children and parents.

Upcoming Classes:

  • Classifying Creatures — Tuesday, December 4, 5:30–7:30 pm
    Invesitgate Iowa’s animals, and learn how you can turn small moments (like an encounter with an animal) into an exiting learning experience.
  • Exploring Engineering — Thursday, February 28, 5:30–7:30 pm
    This workshop is all about engineering!  Learn how you can use hands-on experiences – like playing 3-D shapes, building LEGO bricks and using measurement tools – to teach your child how to think like an engineer.
  • Bits & Bots — Tuesday, April 16, 5:30–7:30 pm
    Introduce your child to the fundamentals of programming, robotics and coding, and explore the ways you can incorporate bits and bots into your child’s daily life.

Registration: Registration for one adult and one child is $25 ($15 for SCI Members). Additional children or adults are $10 each. Children under 3 are free, and childcare is available.

Young children need a caring adult to share their early STEM experiences, and Pint Size Science classes provide opportunities for young children and their parent or caregiver to learn together. Classes are led by SCI’s Science Learning Team and feature hands-on activities to spark curiosity an wonder through play.

Pint Size Science

This interactive classroom experience offered September through May allows young explorers ages 3 to 5 to discover the world around them through fun, hands-on activities.

Class Times: Classes are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:15 am and 10:30 am. Classes last approximately 45 minutes. Registration opens August 6.

Pint Size Science: Toddler Edition

Toddler Edition classes use hands-on, sensory activites to engage young explorers ages 20 months to 3 in science topics.

Class Times: Toddler Edition classes are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:15 am. Classes last approximately 45 minutes. Registration opens August 6.

2018–2019 Schedule

New for 2018-2019: Classes are set-up as a three-month series related to the same topic. Registration for all classes in a session is not required, though it is encouraged!

Classifying Creatures Series
Investigate real Iowa animals and what they need to survive. Learn about animal parts and how they can be sorted by their characteristics.

Exploring Engineering Series
Explore 3-D shapes and how they fit together to create structures. Use LEGO to participate in design challenges and use different types of measurement tools.

Bits and Bots Series
Discover cause and effect while learning about the fundamentals of programming. Be introduced to simple rovbotics and coding.

Registration

Pint Size Science classes are limited to 12 students per class. Registration for all classes in a session is not required, though it is encouraged! Pre-registration is encouraged to reserve your spot. To register or for more information, call the Sales Office at (515) 274-6868.

SCI is experiencing a season of space exploration! From common astronomical occurrences to rare cosmic phenomena, join us to learn about our solar system and beyond.

STAR PARTIES

Experience the out-of-this-world space observation! Join SCI staff and members of the Des Moines Astronomical Society (DMAS) to take a look through high-powered telescopes and get a quick lesson on the basics of telescope operation. Guests will have the opportunity to observe celestial objects, colorful double stars and star clusters, meteor showers and more.Star Parties are free and open to the public.
