Special Ruby Reads Storytime on June 12th!

You’ve probably seen the red pandas at the zoo, but have you met Ruby the red panda yet?

Ruby is a very special red panda stuffed bear, and she loves to read!  Join Ruby for one of her favorite stories and meet some of her animal friends from Blank Park Zoo during this fun and interactive program geared toward ages 2-4.

Description Dates/Times/Notes

Family Build: Builders of all ages are welcome as we turn our library community room into a world of its own! Various centers will be set up for different age groups so everyone in the family can create to their heart’s content. November 8 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room Drop-in program.

Exploration Stations: Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to be little library explorers! This program invites you and your child to experience different stations that promote the five practices of early literacy: Read, Talk, Sing, Write, and Play! Activities include reading tents, felt boards, crafts, singing with rhymes, sensory bins, dramatic play, and writing activities. Siblings six and older are welcome to explore the library. November 15 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room Drop-in program.

Bilingual Story time and Art Project: Join Senorita Amanda for Spanish stories, music, movement, and a creative project inspired by Mexican folk art. An authentic sweet treat will be served as well. November 29 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room Registration required.

Absolute Science: Join us for an evening of laugh out loud science entertainment! Come see science in action and enjoy demonstrations like musical metal pipes, winter sticky explosions, and more. December 6 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room No registration required.

Family Bedtime Stories: End the day as a family with books and bedtime fun! Join us for this 30-minute program in your pajamas and slippers with your favorite sleepy time friend or blanket. Program highlights include picture books, puppets, felt stories, finger plays, music, dancing, and bubbles galore. December 13 6:15 – 6:45 p.m. Story Time Room No registration required.

Zoo Show ’n Tell: Join the Blank Park Zoo for a little hands-on learning about some of their animals. Everyone in your family will get a chance to meet different animals and learn about their important role in the circle of life. December 20 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room No registration required.

Family Bingo Night: Great fun for the whole family. We will have themed bingo cards for the younger children and traditional bingo cards for everyone else. Play to win, ‘cause everyone wins! Popcorn will be provided. December 27 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room No registration required.

Romp ‘n Read: Too cold to play outside? Come to the library the early weeks of January for a warm, safe place to let your kids play and learn together. This program features a variety of indoor movement activities and a book nook in our community room that you and your child can explore together. Adults need to accompany their children at all times. Recommended for ages 5 and younger. Siblings 6 and older are welcome to do an art project in the teen room. January 3, January 10* 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room No registration required.

Japanese Culture Night: Bring the whole family for an exciting night that celebrates Japanese culture and traditions. Take off your shoes before sitting down for storytime and music followed by exploration stations that involve all the senses such as a taste testing (includes tasting Japanese candy), craft inspired by Japanese art, language, and more! January 17 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room Registration required.

Family S“team” Night: While working as a team, families will have a blast utilizing their investigative science, technology, engineering, art, and math skills while exploring various hands-on stations. A “WEE” STEAM corner will be provided for the littles. Brain food for all ages! January 24 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room Registration required.

Family Sing-Along: Explore music together in a relaxed and playful setting. This is a 30-minute educationally-based program taught by local instructor and guitarist, Denise Forney. Classes include exposure to a variety of early music concepts, singing, finger plays, dancing, fun props, instrument play, and tips to take home. January 31 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room No registration required.

Art Night Out: Bring the whole family to enjoy a relaxing evening of making masterpieces of your own. Led by an expert art educator from the Des Moines Art Center. February 7 6:15 – 7:15 p.m. Library Community Room Space limited. Registration required.

Storytime Yoga: Storytime Yoga is a full body experience building early literacy skills and healthy bodies at the same time! Featuring puppets, stories, songs, yoga poses and silly breathing exercises for beginner yogis of all ages. A mandala activity will follow along with herbal tea and juice station. Feel free to bring your own mat, but they are not required. February 14 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room Registration required.

Daniel Tiger Neighborhood Party: Won’t you be, our guest? Join Daniel Tiger and Library staff for an evening of celebrating what it means to be a good neighbor and friend. Stories, music, activities, and healthy snacks. Daniel Tiger will make an appearance for high fives, hugs and photos. February 21 6:15 – 7:00 p.m. Library Community Room Registration required.
