Have a pint-sized sports lover? Many young athletes choose to spend part of their summers participating in sports camps to improve their skills and work toward the next level of play. From volleyball to football to soccer, we’ve rounded up eight awesome sports camps to keep your little athlete on the ball this summer.
Ankeny High School Track & Field Camp
Many area high schools offer all kinds of sports camps in the summer. Ankeny High school is offering summer track camps for boys and girls entering fourth through eighth grades this fall. Track & Field camp will provide customized instruction for all ability levels. Participants will have an opportunity to try various events. Participants will receive a camp t-shirt.
Location: South View Track, Ankeny High School, Ankeny, IA.
Details: Session #1 is June 1st-5th. Grades 4-6 meet at 10:30 to 11:50 am and grades 7-8 meet at 9:00 to 10:30 am. Session #2 is June 8th-12th. Grades 4-6 meet at 9:00 to 10:30 am and grades 7-8 meet at 10:30 to 11:50 am. One session costs $60.00 or attend both for $90.00. Go to Ankeny High School’s website to register.
Bulldog Girls Basketball Camps
Local colleges offer up a number of sports camps for area youth. If basketball is your daughter’s sport of choice, look no further. At Bulldog Girls Basketball Camp she will learn the basics of the game, how to be a team player, and that basketball is not only about your physical skill but also your ability to play the game with your mind. Drake offers camps for girls in Kindergarten through 12th grades. Each camper will receive a Bulldog Camp t-shirt.

Details: Camps are offered in June and July and most are from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Camp registration starts at $125.00 and there is a $50.00 non-refundable deposit. Find registration information on Drake’s website.
The Des Moines Menace offer soccer camps in June and July for boys and girls ages three to 14. Menace Camp provides a fun mix of games and drills for players of all abilities and experience levels. Counselors are top-level soccer players, who share their love for the game. Each camper receives a Menace Camp t-shirt, and four tickets to catch the Menace in action at Valley Stadium.

Details: Camps are offered in the morning and evening. Hours vary depending on the age of child. Registration cost is $60 for ages 3 to 4, $80 for ages 5 to 8 and $100 for ages 9 to 14. Save $10 when you register by June 7th. Space is limited.
Simpson Volleyball Camps
Simpson College Volleyball Camps will provide a unique camp experience for volleyball players. Camps provide a variety of training options including skills instruction and drills, specialized position training, team development, team building, player contests, and team competition. They offer a variety of camps for individuals and teams in first through twelfth grades. Each camper will receive a t-shirt.
Location: Hopper Gymnasium and Cowles Center, Simpson College, Indianola, IA
Details: Volley Fest Camp for first to third graders is from 9:00 to 11:00 am and costs $75.00 and Net Fest Camp for fourth to ninth graders is from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and costs $200. Both camps are June 15th to 18th. Register on Simpson’s website.
The First Tee Greater Des Moines
The First Tee of Greater Des Moines conducts summer instruction sessions are June 9th through July 16th. Golfers are grouped by age and experience level. Golf equipment (starter set of clubs with bag) is provided, if needed, as long as supplies last and “scholarships” are available to help cover program costs. Each lesson covers: life skills, rules and etiquette, full swing, short game and putting.
Location: Bright Grandview, Waveland, and A.H. Blank golf courses.

Valley Wrestling Camp
If you have a wrestler in the family, you may want to check out Valley High School’s Wrestling Camp. The camp is open to all boys who will be in first through twelfth grades next fall. Wrestlers will be categorized according to age and ability. Techniques that will be covered include: stance, motion, penetration, singles, doubles, fireman’s carries, rides, reversals, and pinning combinations.

Details: Camp is June 8th -11th from 8:15 to 9:45 am for grades 1-7 and 10:00 am to 12:00 noon for grades 8-12 and costs $55.00. Find more information on Valley High School’s website.
Viking Football Camps
College athletes lead students in fourth through seventh grades on a football adventure each summer. This two day camp reviews basic skill development and instruction, gives campers a chance to interact with current players and coaches and have a ton of fun! Players need to bring cleats or tennis shoes, water bottle, and athletic wear.

Details: Football camp is July 13th & 14th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and costs $50.00. Register on Grandview’s website.
Waukee Youth Tennis Camp
Do you have a tennis lover in the fam? This area-wide, four-day tennis camp offers fun learning and playing opportunities for girls and boys ages 5-17 of all ability levels. Courts will be organized by age, ability and experience to maximize student improvement and enjoyment. Campers receive a t-shirt.

Details: Four camp sessions are offered in June and July. Camp for 5-7 year olds is 8:15 to 9:00 am, 8-11 year olds 9:00 to 10:00 am and 12-17 year olds 10:15 to 11:15 am. $64.00 per camp session. More information.
