Get Down on the Farm in Central Iowa

Even though we live smack dab in the heart of farm country what do your kids truly know about them?  Whether they want to get up close and personal with livestock or pick their own veggies kids will can learn plenty by visiting a local farmstead.  Round up your herd and head to one of these Des Moines-area farms.

Know Before You Go

  • Call ahead to:
    • verify hours as it varies from farm to farm.
    • verify entry fees.
    • verify what facilities are available on-site.
    • verify which methods of payment they accept.  Many farms only accept cash or check.
    • verify exactly how to get there from wherever you are. (Unless, you think a day lost in Timbuktu is a fun adventure.)
  • Remember comfortable shoes and wear sun screen.
  • Bring your water bottle and pack a picnic if the farm allows.
  • Take along hand sanitizer if there will be opportunities for petting animals.
  • And, don’t forget your camera.

C&M Acres raises both Suri and Huacaya alpacas and there is a fiber mill located on the farm where they make their own yarn.  The farm welcomes visitors and group tours.

CY Alpacas

C Y Alpacas is a small alpaca farm.  They offer tours of the farm by appointment throughout the year. They also have a retail store.

Iowa State Dairy Farm

Visitors are asked to stay in the foyer area, where the milking parlor can be viewed. Milking begins at 5:00 am and again at 5:00 pm and lasts about five hours.  Group tours are offered by appointment.

Maytag Dairy Farm

Maytag Dairy Farm is renowned for their bleu cheese.  You can take a short tour of the farm and facility and get an up close view of their cheese making process. Try samples and purchase cheese at their store Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Northern Prairie Chevre

Northern Prairie Chevre is an Artisan goat cheese processing company. Located on the farm are a processing facility, dairy barn, parlor and goats, along with a retail store open to the public from April through December, Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. They offer guided educational tours by appointment and fee.
