There is no one alive who is you-er than you!”Happy Birthday to You! – Dr. Seuss.  March 2 is the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, the famed author more commonly known as Dr. Seuss…the man responsible for “Green Eggs & Ham,” “The Lorax” and countless other books that probably have a place of honor on your bookshelf. You can celebrate Dr. Seuss at one of the events planned throughout Des Moines to honor the writer.

Breakfast with Dr. Seuss

Enjoy breakfast, games, fun, and meet the “Cat in the Hat” at the First United Methodist Church in Indianola. Please register by calling the Indianola Public Library at (515) 961-9418. Sponsored by the Friends of the Indianola Public Library.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! Storytime

In celebration of the beloved author’s birthday on March 2nd, local Barnes & Nobles will host a special Storytime featuring coloring, activities and more. Don’t miss hearing “The Cat in the Hat” and “What Pet Should I Get” at this fun-filled Storytime!

Read Across America Day

Read Across America Day, which coincides with Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, is hosted by the Des Moines Education Association.  They have a fun party planned at Merle Hay Mall from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in honor of the day. The event will provide FREE children’s activities, games, books and cookies.

Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Party

Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday at the Kirkendall Public Library in Ankeny.  They will host a open house celebration from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.  Party goers will enjoy “Seuss Bingo, party hats, a scavenger hunt, photo booth and more.

In celebration of the beloved author’s birthday, local The Shoppes of Three Fountains Barnes & Noble in West Des Moines will host a special Storytime featuring coloring, activities and more. Don’t miss hearing “The Cat in the Hat” and “What Pet Should I Get” at this fun-filled Storytime at 6:30 pm.

If you can’t make it out to one of the events listed, here’s a few other ways to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with your kids:

  1. Have “Green Eggs & Ham” for breakfast.  Instead of adding green dye to the scrambled eggs, add pureed broccoli.
  2. Wear something striped, just like “The Cat in the Hat”.
  3. Watch “The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!”.  Weekdays at 8:30 am on IPTV.
  4. Plant or draw a tree in honor of “The Lorax”.
  5. Read your favorite Dr. Seuss book at bedtime.
