January 1st

January 2nd – 11th

Too cold to play outside? Visit the Clive Public Library the early weeks of January for Winter Romp N’ Read, a warm, safe place to let your kids play and learn together. This joint library and parks and recreation program will feature a variety of indoor movement activities and a book nook.

January 5th

January is made for screen-free fun at Michael’s, during their MakeBreak.  Check out their event calendar for kids and families and embrace your creative side by making a Snowman Mason Jar.

January 11th

A dog embarks on a 400-mile journey home after it’s separated from its owner, Lucas, who is an aspiring medical student. “A Dog’s Way Home” hits Des Moines Theatres today.

Drop the kids off with Ankeny Parks & Recreation for Friday Fun Night! They’ll play games, make arts and crafts, play sports, watch movies, and more. Pizza provided.

January 11th & 12th

The gates will swing open on Cinch World’s Toughest Rodeo at Wells Fargo arena for some edge of your seat, eight seconds at a time family fun.  Find tickets starting at $20 on the Iowa Events Center website.

January 12th

Enjoy a morning of activities specifically designed for those with special needs during Adaptive Sports Day. Courage League Sports will lead some of your favorite field games adapted to the skill level of participants at the Doanes Park Youth Center. Pre-Register with Pleasant Hill Parks and Recreation.

January 18th & 19th

Children & Families of Iowa’s Kidsfest is Iowa’s largest children’s festival. Each year thousands of people attend KidsFest at the Iowa State Fairgrounds where they enjoy the free entertainment on multiple stages, costume characters and mascots, games, bounce houses, make and take activities, visit the HyVee Hometown area, explore the exhibits, and so much more.

January 19th

Join Waukee Parks & Recreation for the seventh annual FamilyFest. This FREE, family friendly event will help your kiddos burn off some cabin fever energy.  Check out Waukee area businesses, enjoy games and prizes, and jump on inflatables. EVERYTHING IS FREE!

Stop by the West Des Moines Library to see the DesMoinNTrak’s N-scale working Model Train layout. This event is open to adults and children of all ages. Make sure to stop by the Children’s Department for a fun train craft before you leave.

January 25th & 26th

Cars fly, trees fight back, and monsters are on the loose in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts™ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! This concert features the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets™ in high-definition, on a giant screen, while the Des Moines Symphony performs John Williams’ unforgettable score. Relive every magical moment as the music brings life to a story that has enchanted the world at the Des Moines Civic Center.
