Welcome to the first full month of summer! Our monthly Kid n’ Play List includes some of our favorite summer happenings – my family and I mark on our calendar every year. Of course, July is synonymous with fireworks and family -friendly festivals you don’t want to miss.  Here are the top 10 things to do with kids in Des Moines this July—a few of which are 100% FREE!

In addition, we have plenty more ideas for enjoying summer sun and fun with your kids: Cheap Summer Movies, Outdoor Concerts  and lazy days at the pool. We’ll keep adding to our calendar daily and sending our weekly newsletter in time for each weekend, but here’s your chance to look ahead for these July favorites and get them on your calendar.

July 4th

Happy Independence Day!  Use our guide to Independence Day Fun in Des Moines to help you plan your 4th of July holiday. 

July 12th-14th

AnimeIowa, the largest anime convention in Iowa, will be at the Iowa Events Center. The Convention celebrates all things anime (Japanese movies and TV shows), as well as, manga (comics), gaming, costuming, and more.

July 13th

Join Courage League Sports and West Des Moines Parks and Recreation at Holiday Park Aquatic Center for a Special Needs Pool Party.  Enjoy an evening of fun reserved just for your special person and your family.

July 16th

Do you know a little girl who loves princesses AND the outdoors?  Princess Adventures in Jester Park are for her!  Girls ages 4-6 will learn about a courageous woman from the past, participate in a nature activity, and enjoy a tea party with a snack.

July 19th

The last of Disney’s 2019 remakes, The Lion King, roars into Des Moines theaters this month.

July 20th

Today marks the 50th Anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s lunar walk.  The Science Center of Iowa will be hosting an Apollo 50 Anniversary Celebration in honor of this momentus occasion. 

July 22nd & 23rd

RAGBRAI will be making its way through Central Iowa this year with over nights in Winterset and Indianola.  It’s always a great spectacle to behold and it also may be known for parties, performances and PIE. 

July 23rd

Join ISU Extension at the Enabling Garden in Altoona for FREE children’s art and craft activities during Children’s Art in the Garden. 

July 27th

Kids ages 6-14 can swim, bike and run at Ankeny Parks and Recreation’s 13th Annual Ankeny Youth Triathlon.

July 28th

Cowles Commons is the location for Fam Jam, a FREE family-friendly event featuring children’s bands, bounce houses, art activities, food trucks and more.
