October 1st

Grab the leash (and poop bag:) and take your dog for a walk this week, it’s National Walk Your Dog Week, October 1st-7th.

October 5th

Step it up Iowa! The Healthiest State Initiatives’s Annual Walk is on October 5th.  Visit their website to find an organized walk near you.

October 7th

Based on the bestselling book series by James Patterson the movie Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life sneaks into theaters on October 7th.

October 9th

Fall Frenzy, a celebration of the season will be held at the Giovannetti Community Shelter in Walker Johnston Park on October 9th.  Bring your family for a day of FREE Fall Fun! There will be a scavenger hunt, outdoor games, crafts, and a bald eagle!

October 15th

The Des Moines Marathon runs into town on October 15th and 16th.  Besides being a spectator, kids and families can get a sense of the “big race” and learn more about health and wellness, by participating in the Kids Run or by attending the Kids Expo.  Most events take place downtown at or near the Iowa Events Center.

Fire Prevention Week is October 9th-15th. Join Johnston Fire Department on October 15th for an Open House. There will be demonstrations, fire prevention tips, tours and plenty of time for interaction with the firefighters.

October 22nd

Good grief!  It’s the 50th Anniversary of It’s a Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and Center Grove Orchard is celebrating.  Explore their Corn Maze, which is designed from a famous scene of the show, visit with Snoopy who will be strolling the Farmyard and watch a special showing of the movie.

October 29th

While we can all celebrate the colors, smells, and events of autumn, it also means saying goodbye to area farmers’ markets. The last day of the Downtown Farmers’ Market is October 29th.

Secrets are waiting to be revealed at Salisbury House’s Mysteries of the Castle event October 29th.  Kids are invited to come in their costume to enjoy crafts and live entertainment, trick or treating throughout the mansion, snacks and more.

October 31st
