Kid n’ Play will be a monthly feature on dsm4kids. It will highlight happenings, holidays, volunteer opportunities and other events for kids and families in Des Moines. Feel free to contact us and contribute your own reasons to Kid n’ Play throughout the year.
Meals 4 Munchkins is a kids cooking class presented by the Waukee Hy-Vee. This is a hands-on class and recipes are designed for kiddos ages seven and up. The first 1,500 fans will receive a FREE Green Youth Jersey at the Iowa Wild Kids Winterfest Game. Catch the action on the ice at the Iowa Events Center on January 18th.
In honor of National Figure Skating Month, sign your kid up for lessons with the Central Iowa Figure Skating Club through their Learn to Skate Program. The cost is $100 and includes six one hour sessions and free skate rental.
Kids can pig out on bacon at the Science Center’s Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival Jr. on Sunday, January 25th. A number of swine related activities will be served up, including: vendors, live demonstrations, chef and pig calling contests and the opportunity to become a CertiFRIED Baconologist. January is Poverty in America Awareness Month. According to the Iowa Data Center 16.1% or 113,000 of Iowa’s children live in poverty. And unfortunately, among those, the youngest are most likely to be the poorest. The prevalence of poverty during a child’s most formative years can have lasting consequences for their education, health, and family economic success.
