May is Bike Month in Des Moines

Riding your own two wheels around town is one of the great joys of being a kid. Des Moines is very bike friendly, and since May is Bike Month, there’s no better time for families to go for a bike ride. Throughout the month, the Des Moines Bike Collective organizes and sponsors several family friendly activities and events to celebrate the bicycle. So, get geared up, don the helmets and pedal on over to one of these bike related events happening in the Des Moines area.

Bike Month Activities and Events for Kids and Families in Des Moines

Mayor’s Annual Ride and Run

Join the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department for the 2018 Mayor’s Annual Ride and RunMayor Frank Cownie will lead the ride assisted by the DM Register’s Dream Team and proceeds from the event will go towards area trail improvement. This year’s ride will consist of one 23-mile route. Helmets are required for all riders and children must be accompanied by an adult.  Registration is required.

Date: Saturday, April 21, 2018.  Run starts at 9:00 am and the bike ride starts at 10:00 am.
Location: 1551 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Des Moines
Cost: Adults 18+ $30 before April 21 and $40 on the day of the event; Ages 5-18 $5; and
Children 5 and under FREE

Clive Public Library’s Bike and Book Contest

Join the festivities of National Bike Month by riding your bike to the Clive Public Library all of May! For each day you ride to the library, check in at the circulation desk to fill out a raffle ticket and you will be entered in a prize drawing. One entry per person.

Date: May 1 – May 31, 2018 during library hours.

Urbandale Mayor’s Bike Ride

The Urbandale Mayor’s Bike ride offers three different loops to accommodate all levels of bikers: The Little Bikers Loop”, a “Family Fun Loop”, and the “Mayor’s Ride Loop”. This a family friendly event with several FREE kid’s activities planned including a bike rodeo, safety tips, helmet fitting, balloon artist and more from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. (You do not need to participate in the Bike Ride to enjoy the kids’ activities at this event.)

Date: Sunday, May 6, 2018. Ride registration and lunch from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm with the ride beginning at 1:00 pm.
Location: Delta Dental Urbandale Campus, 9000 Northpark Drive, Urbandale
Cost: $30 per single rider and $15 for each additional family member

Mayor’s Bike Ride in Johnston

Join Johnston Mayor Paula Dierenfeld for a fun ride on City trails. The three-mile loop begins and ends at the Johnston Hy-Vee.

Ankeny’s Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride

Join Ankeny Mayor Gary Lorenz for Ankeny’s Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride. Two routes have been chosen for the event: a 15-mile route to the Oasis located on the High Trestle Trail, great for the avid bicyclist; and a 3.5-mile family friendly route, also utilizing the High Trestle Trail and local community trail connections. No registration is required, and all participants should wear a properly fitted bike helmet.

West Des Moines Mayor’s Ride

Join the City of West Des Moines’ Mayor, Steve Gaer, for a morning of cycling in the City of West Des Moines. Different routes will be available to accommodate all ages and abilities. All routes start and end at City Hall. (Routes and distances subject to change.) All registered participants will receive an event t-shirt.

ICubs Pedal to the Park

Bike to a Sunday afternoon game and get a Reserved Grandstand ticket and a water bottle or bike koozie for $8. Add a 20-ounce Sierra Nevada beer and get the entire package for $15. Valet your bike at their new bike gate at Gate D.

Pleasant Hill Pre-K Art Bike Month Project

Celebrate Bike Month at the Pleasant Hill Public Library by learning bicycle safety skills while creating a collaborative project. Kids ages 2-6 can learn appropriate safety skills to navigate the dos and don’ts of riding a bicycle. Helmets will be required and parent participation is recommended.  This is a FREE event, but registration is required.

Coolest Bike In Town

Think your bike is the coolest in town? Let our judges make it official! Enter your bike into this bike “beauty pageant” to be crowned the coolest bike in town! Hosted by the Des Moines Biker Collective, this is a fun, low-key event and they encourage participants of all ages, bike types, and walks of life to join in the fun! Road, gravel, fixie, trike, tandem–they want to see it all! All proceeds from registration will go to the Bicycle Collective’s Earn-a-Bike and Bike Giveaway programs.

Pedal the Prairie

Roll on over the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge for a spring bike ride on the Prairie Parkway Bike Trail! Ride among wildflowers, toss seed bombs, meet live animals, hike the trails, with games and other activities. Prairie Parkway (10 miles) and Family Fun Hike (1.5 miles) both start at 9:00. Activities until 1:00 p.m. Visitor Center open until 4:00 p.m. Registration is required.

Indianola Bike Fest

Free, family friendly fun on Indianola’s town square. Come for the bike safety course, giant tricycle races, games and more!
