Soup’s On! 4 Kids in Des Moines

Soup’s On! 4 Kids in Des Moines

January is National Soup Month, which seems to be a bit of a no brainer, since winter and soup go hand-in-hand. And, since Des Moines seems to be so good at delivering us nice cold winters, of course it’s going to be great at bringing us nice hot soups! Here are a few “souper” spots to check out around town.

Gateway Market and Café

2002 Woodland Avenue • Des Moines, IA 50312 • (515) 243-1754 • https://gatewaymarket.com/

Unleash your inner Earth mama and head on down to Gateway Market and Café. Their healthy, hearty and organic menu will leave you satisfied and quite pleased. Two homemade soups are offered every day, Chicken Corn Tortilla and Veggie Chili (vegan), and they have at least one vegetarian or vegan option each day. Chicken Noodle, Tuscan White Bean, Veggie Tortellini, Pepper Jack Potato, Tomato Basil Bisque and Clam Chowder are all in rotation. Grab a bowl and sop up the goodness with a hunk of South Union Garlic Focaccia. And, don’t forget – on Tuesdays, kids eat FREE after 4:00 pm!

Pickerman’s Soup and Sandwich

6750 Westown Parkway #210 • West Des Moines, IA 50266 • (515) 440-1856 • http://www.pickermansdeli.com/

This kid-friendly, soup and sandwich shop is the place to go if you’re looking for familiar family-pleasing staples. They of course have the beloved Chicken Noodle and Tomato Basil loved by kids and adults alike. And, if you’re a cheese lover they’ve got you covered with Cheeseburger Chowder, Broccoli Cheese and Wisconsin Cheddar. It’s the perfect cure for hungry kids on a cold day.

Pho 515

801 University Avenue • Des Moines, IA 50314 • (515) 243-2434 • https://pho515.com/

Pho is a Vietnamese beef noodle soup, consisting of rice noodles and a variety of meats (or tofu and veggies) in a beef (or chicken or veggie) broth seasoned with anise, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. Yum!  But make sure you leave a little room—Pho 515 is famous for more than their noodle soup.  I suggest ordering a Banh Mi Sandwich with your Pho!

Reising Sun Café

107 2nd Street • Polk City, IA 50226 • (515) 984-9061 • https://www.facebook.com/reisingsuncafe/

Nestled in Polk City is the cozy Reising Sun Café, a favorite local spot for both breakfast and lunch. This little Cafe is also well known for their tasty soups, including; Chili, Cheeseburger, Tomato Bisque, Ham and Bean, Potato and Chicken and Rice.  All should be right up your alley, if you’re in the mood for some serious comfort food. But be warned, you may just want to curl up with a blanket at your table because after this meal, you will feel right at home.

Scenic Route Bakery

350 E Locust Street Suite 104  •  Des Moines, IA 50309  • (515) 288-0004 • http://scenicroutebakerydsm.com/

This popular downtown coffee shop and bakery is so much more than lattes, croissants and muffins. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!!!) Be sure to try one of their homemade soups of the day including Coconut Curry Squash, Creamy Tomato Basil, Creamy Roasted Cauliflower, Chicken Tortilla, Carrot Garlic and more.  The soups change seasonally and will make your day a little warmer no matter the time of year. Don’t forget the crusty yet chewy grilled housemade bread that’s included with your bowl of soup.  They are a bakery after all!
