January is National Soup Month, which seems to be a bit of a no brainer, since winter and soup go hand-in-hand. And, since Des Moines seems to be so good at delivering us nice cold winters, of course it’s going to be great at bringing us nice hot soups! Here are a few “souper” spots to check out around town.
General Store Eatery
Valley Junction • 206 5th Street • West Des Moines, IA 50265 • (515) 279-6828 • https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Deli/The-General-Store-Eatery-186391208063943/
Hearty soups are served up to hungry patrons starting at 11:00 am at the General Store Eatery in Valley Junction. Each day brings a different homemade soup du jour; go on Mondays for their famed Cheeseburger Soup. Everything on the menu tastes like something your grandma would make and a cup of soup will run you $3.95 and a bowl $4.75. If you don’t feel like dining in, you can get a frozen quart of soup to go.
Gateway Market and Café

Two homemade soups are offered every day, Chicken Corn Tortilla and Veggie Chili (vegan), and they have at least one vegetarian or vegan option each day. Chicken Noodle, Tuscan White Bean, Veggie Tortellini, Pepper Jack Potato, Tomato Basil Bisque and Clam Chowder are all in rotation. Grab a bowl and sop up the goodness with a hunk of South Union Garlic Focaccia. And, don’t forget – on Tuesdays, kids eat FREE after 4:00 pm!

Scenic Route Bakery
350 E Locust Street Suite 104 • Des Moines, IA 50309 • (515) 288-0004 • http://scenicroutebakerydsm.com/
This popular downtown coffee shop and bakery is so much more than lattes, croissants and muffins. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!!!) Be sure to try one of their homemade soups of the day including Coconut Curry Squash, Creamy Tomato Basil, Creamy Roasted Cauliflower, Chicken Tortilla, Carrot Garlic and more. The soups change seasonally and will make your day a little warmer no matter the time of year. Don’t forget the crusty yet chewy grilled housemade bread that’s included with your bowl of soup. They are a bakery after all!
