Unfortunately, Blo Blow Dry Bar closed on December 31, 2015.
The boys were out of town at Cub Scout camp last week. So, my daughter and I took advantage of the time while they were away by having a fun outing and a bit of bonding time of our own. My friend Kristin opened the Blo – Blow Dry Bar in the East Village almost a year ago. I had the opportunity to attend the Grand Opening party and knew as soon as I walked in I would have to bring my daughter. I finally scheduled an appointment for us and am sharing our experience with you.

While You’re There
We started our mommy/daughter day out by making an appointment on-line. It was a super simple process and I received all the appointment deets in an email along with the parking info. Blo truly is a “girly” place. From the hot pink awnings outside to the high gloss modern interior. My six year old pink loving daughter loved it as soon as she walked in.
At Blo, the experience typically starts with a complimentary glass of water or wine (for patrons over 21:) and a peek at the “Menu” for inspiration on various styles, ranging from a classic blowout “Red Carpet” to the bouncy “Holly Would.” Click here for the full Menu.
My daughter and I had such a blast looking through the styles, selecting our looks and sitting side by side throughout the experience. Girly Girl chose a waterfall braid on her stylist’s recommendation. I wanted “beachy waves”, so my stylist recommended a combo of the “Holly Would’ and the “Pillow Talk”. They are running some summer hair specials, so if you don’t see what you are looking for on the menu just ask.
After we picked out our hairstyles, it was off to get shampooed. The appointments are 45 minutes long and do not feel rushed at all. If you’re wondering, they do have booster seats for the kiddos. Cool looking ones that match their styling chairs at that. My daughter loved having her hair washed and her head massaged. I didn’t mind it too much either.
Once our hair was clean, we were back in the styling chairs. It was a great time to relax and chat a bit in between the hum of the blow dryer. While you’re being styled you can look out their fantastic windows and catch the cars and pedestrians parading up and down 6th street. I wanted to be sure to mention that my daughter’s hair stylist was great with her. She said she had daughters and was used to working on little girl’s hair. Not only was this a super fun outing, but we both loved our looks, and it felt good to let my daughter know that it’s ok to pamper yourself sometimes.
The Des Moines Blo location hosts parties. Any girl would love to have a birthday party here. They also host other special events throughout the year. As mentioned above, Blo has several hair styling options for all kinds of events, think proms and wedding season. They offer lots of other services such as updos, braids and on-location styling which can be scheduled at additional cost. Gift certificates and membership packages are also available.
To celebrate their one year anniversary they are offering $25 Blo Outs on Saturday, June 27th. They will also be serving bubbly and sweet treats that day.
After Your Visit
Blo is in a great location in the East Village. After we got our fabulous on, we strolled a couple of blocks around the neighborhood and did a little shopping. My daughter got all kinds of compliments on her hair as we wandering around and I caught her looking at herself in store windows a few times. We picked up some cards at Ephemera, purchased a dog treat (for the neighbor’s dog) at Jett and Monkey’s and I picked up some gifts at RAYGUN, while my daughter played in their cool kid area.
As we were walking, hand in hand, back to the car my daughter told me it was the best day ever. She says that quite a bit, but it’s always good to hear!
