May Day is just around the corner and is a favorite family holiday. I remember the thrill of tip toeing up to a friend’s door, ringing the bell and running back to the car as fast as I could go. I was always afraid I was going to get kissed. My kids now carry on the tradition and they seem to really enjoy delivering May Day Baskets too. I’m pretty sure they love to “ring and run”, but they also like showering their friends and neighbors with a small gift.
A May Day Basket can really contain about anything…candy, small gifts or if you’re a traditionalist, flowers. We’ve put together a couple of cute flower inspired May Day Basket ideas. One with candy and one without. We still have a candy hangover from Valentine’s Day and Easter, so I thought a candyless option would be appreciated.
May Day Basket Idea #1: Flower Head
This idea is similar to a grass head and is a DIY project for the kiddos. They can watch the flowers grow from seed and they can replant them once they get big.
Supplies:
- Seed Pots
- Hole Punch
- Pipe Cleaners
- Potting Soil
- Flower Seeds
- Small Baggie
- Face Stickers or Googly Eyes
- Instructions
- Tag
Punch two holes opposite of each other in the seed pot. Attach and secure the pipe cleaner to make a handle. Fill the pot about three quarters full with the potting soil. In a small baggie, include the flower seeds, face stickers or googly eyes and instructions. Lay the baggie on top of the soil. You can either punch a hole in the tag and attach to the pipe cleaner handle with a string or attach it to a toothpick and then stick it in the dirt.
May Day Basket Idea #2: Sucker Bouquet
Chocolate raisins look like soil with gummy worms crawling in it and the suckers are in full bloom.
Supplies:
- Small Flower Pot
- Hole Punch
- Pipe Cleaners
- Paper Flowers
- Small Suckers
- Chocolate Covered Raisins
- Gummy Worms
- Tag
Punch two holes opposite each other in the small flower pot. Attach and secure the pipe cleaner to make a handle. Fill the pot with the chocolate covered raisins and a few gummy worms. Cut out or punch out the paper flowers. Punch a hole in the center. Slip the sucker through the hole and twist the paper a bit to secure. You can also use tape. Add 3-5 of the flower suckers to the pot. You can either punch a hole in the tag and attach to the pipe cleaner handle with a string or attach it to the front of the pot with some tape.
