Summer is just around the corner and many Des Moines area churches are getting ready for Vacation Bible School. If you are looking for ways to keep the kids busy once school is out, you may want to look into sending them to bible school. Many provide stories, games, snacks, crafts, and music all wrapped into a fun-filled week. Best of all many of them are FREE or have a nominal registration fee.
VBS is usually a summer event that a local church sponsors for preschoolers up to high school age kids to learn about Bible stories. Age guidelines vary from church to church with many focusing on elementary school ages. Kids attend around three to four hours each day.
Most churches run their own Vacation Bible School programs. If the church you attend is not holding its own VBS or you don’t belong to a church, most welcome kids from outside of their congregation. Here are six Vacation Bible Schools taking place in Des Moines this summer.
St. Paul Lutheran Church
Location: 1100 SE Sharon Drive, Ankeny
Dates: June 15th -19th , 2015
Details: Welcome to Camp Discovery! At St. Paul’s Camp Discovery VBS, all children age 4 through 8th grade are invited to learn how Jesus works in and through us. Kids will love hearing tree-mendous accounts from the Bible and experiencing Treetop Storytelling, Big Timber Bible Challenge, Splash and Dash Games, Campfire Snacks, Wilderness Crafts, and more! Register by May 24th.
Altoona United Methodist Church
Location: 602 5th Avenue SW, Altoona
Dates: June 22nd – June 26th
Details: Send your kids on an icy expedition! At Everest VBS at Altoona United Methodist Church, kids embark on the coolest adventure of the summer! Everest VBS is filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Register by June 22nd.
Meredith Drive Reformed Church

Indianola First United Methodist Church
Location: 307 West Ashland Avenue, Indianola
Dates: June 15th – 18th
Details: Join us this summer as we Blast to the Past at VBS! Travel back in time and Zoom through God’s Word with us as we discover God’s everlasting love! Open to kids that are 3 years old (who are potty trained) through entering 5th grade Join us for this time travel adventure! Registration cost is $5.00.
Aldersgate United Methodist Church
Location: 3600 75th Street, Urbandale
Dates: June 14th-19th
Details: At Cokesbury’s G-Force VBS, kids explore how to put their faith into action. In this missions focused VBS, kids experience God’s unstoppable love and discover how to fuel up and move in and through life with God. Cost is $10.00 per child. .
Windsor Heights Lutheran Church
Location: 1240 66th Street, Windsor Heights
Date: June 21st-25th
Details: VBS is a partnership between Windsor Heights Lutheran Church and St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale. Opening Night is on Sunday night from 5:00 – 7:30 pm. Classes during the week are for children entering PreK – 6th grade in Fall 2015. Register on Windsor Heights Lutheran Church’s website.
