Walk On, Des Moines!

Walk On, Des Moines!

Walking is a fantastic activity for the whole family. It’s easy, cheap and the only equipment needed is a comfy pair of shoes.  Getting kids walking at a young age teaches them to lead an active healthy lifestyle and is also a great way to sneak in some quality family time.  When kids learn how to navigate their neighborhood on foot, it can also give them a sense of independence and freedom.  This Wednesday, October 7th, Iowans are being encouraged to walk by two major initiatives: Iowa’s Healthiest State Walk and International Walk to School Day.

Iowa Healthiest State Walk

The Healthiest State Initiative, the State Fire Marshal Division, and Live Healthy Iowa Kids are encouraging Iowans to “Walk at the Whistle” on Wednesday, October 7, as part of the fifth annual Healthiest State Walk. The day will feature walks in conjunction with fire drills for schools and businesses.  Walks are scheduled in all 99 of Iowa’s counties.  There are 192 walks scheduled in Polk County alone!

To find a walk near you, go to Iowa Healthiest State Initiative and click on Learn More under Walk at the Whistle. It will take you to a map of Iowa.  Click on your county and the website will provide you with a list of walks taking place.  If you can’t find a group near you.  You can always create your own and register it on the website.  You can also walk as an individual.  If you’re unable to join a group walk, you can still get out and enjoy the day and get your one kilometer walk in.

National Walk To School Day

Each October, millions of children, parents, teachers and community leaders across the globe walk to school to celebrate International Walk to School Day. Walk to School Day is an energizing event, reminding parents and children alike of the simple joy of walking to school. But it’s usually also a kick-off event. Walk to School Day becomes a catalyst for on-going efforts to increase walking all of the time.

Walk Bike To School’s website provides several ideas on how to participate in National Walk to School Day.  In general, events are structured three ways, with many variations to each. Students and their families walk or bicycle to school from home. Students and their families walk from a designated starting point, where they may have driven to.  Or, students can walk at school during an assembly, recess or as part of a class activity.

Whether you choose to participate in one of these initiatives or not, make it a priority to get out and walk as a family on Wednesday, October 7th.
