Where to Go Sledding in Des Moines

Find 2019 sledding spots here.

I’ve been holding off on writing this article, since this year’s winter hasn’t been filled with the snowfalls like last year.  Now that it has finally snowed, kids will be ready to get out and play in it.  You can be prepared with our list of the best sledding hills in the Des Moines area. Here’s to a happy snow day and where you can go sledding in Des Moines.

Know Before You Go

  • Call ahead to:
    • verify that sledding is allowed, some places only allow sledding after receiving several inches of snow.
    • ask for permission before sledding on private property.
    • verify what facilities are available on-site. Most local parks winterize their restrooms and you will not have access to them.
    • verify where the sledding hill is within the park or golf course.
  • Make sure the hill—and the space at the bottom of it—is completely clear of trees, fences, utility poles, and other obstacles.
  • Consider wearing a helmet. The head is the most common area of the body to get hurt—accounting for 34 percent of all sledding injuries.
  • Make sure your kids know that once their run is done, they should quickly move to the side, out of the other sledders’ way.
  • Try to sled during the daytime, when visibility is better. If you go sledding at night, make sure the hillside is well lit and all potential hazards are visible.
  • Remember to dress for the weather.
  • Bring along a warm beverage and a snack.
  • And, don’t forget your camera.
