Youth Groups & You: Boys & Girls Club of Central Iowa

The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Central Iowa (BGCCI) is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.  BGCCI provides after-school, school and summer break educational and recreational activities to kids ages five to 18.  Area youth can participate in both supervised and self-directed activities through four clubs in Des Moines.

Pros

BGCCI is part of a larger national organization that has been in existence since 1860.  The organization helps a high number of low-income and minority kids that many other youth organizations underserve.  Many studies have shown that boys and girls who have participated in a youth program are more involved in constructive education, social and recreational activities.  They are also less likely to be involved in unhealthy, deviant and dangerous activities.

Cons

Like many similar organizations maintaining an adequate funding base and volunteers are a continual challenge.  They have great staff that provide a positive atmosphere for their energetic members but can always use more volunteers to help administer programs.  With that said the organization has had some controversy in the past few years in regards to the salaries paid to its top executives.

Best For

The club is open to all types of boys and girls.  It is especially beneficial for kids who do not have adult care or supervision and need a safe environment to go after school and during school and summer breaks.

Time Commitment

Club hours are 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday during the school year and 7:30 am to 6:00 pm during the summer.

Supplies are provided by the club.
