Pumpkin picking season is here which means it’s time to start mapping out which pumpkin patches you’re going to hit this year. And, since most of our area’s pumpkin patches also offer old-fashioned fun (think petting zoos, hayrides and corn mazes) it’s a good idea to plan on making a day of it. To help you narrow down your choices, we’ve rounded up our favorite pumpkin patches, all within a short drive of Des Moines.

Pumpkin Patch Season: September through October

Know Before You Go

  • Call ahead to:
    • verify picking dates as it varies from farm to farm.
    • verify entry fees.
    • verify what facilities are available on-site.
    • verify which methods of payment they accept.  Many farms only accept cash or check.
    • verify exactly how to get there from wherever you are. (Unless, you think a day lost in Timbuktu is a fun adventure.)
  • Remember comfortable shoes (you will be walking in fields) and wear sun screen.
  • Bring your water bottle and pack a picnic if the farm allows.
  • Take along hand sanitizer, especially if there will be a petting zoo.
  • And, don’t forget your camera.
