Tips 4 Berry Picking with Kids

  • Call ahead to:
    • verify picking dates, times and seasons as it varies from farm to farm.
    • verify what equipment you will need (do they provide picking containers?) and what facilities (potties) are available on-site.
    • verify which methods of payment they accept.  Some farms only accept cash or check.
    • verify exactly how to get there from wherever you are. (Unless, you think a day lost in Timbuktu is a fun adventure.)
  • Wear comfortable shoes (you will be walking in fields) and wear sun screen. You may also want to wear a hat and bring along a wagon or stroller.
  • Bring water bottles, snacks and/or pack a picnic if the farm allows.
  • Relax and have fun. It’s okay to eat a few berries as you pick them (if it’s not, I would think about going to a different farm on your next trip).
  • See the day as an outing/activity in itself. Take breaks to check out the farm sights, explore the rows, eat a snack, etc. You’ll walk away with a bunch of berries AND happy, exhausted kids.
  • And, don’t forget your camera… children with berry stained smiles make a great photo-op!
