Last, but not least in our summer camp series, we’re discussing fine art camps for kids in Des Moines. Whether you’re enriching an already-artistic-child’s journey or just making an introduction, there are a variety of programs to choose from. Deciding which dream to chase may be the toughest decision your young artist has to make. Here are eight arts based summer camp options for kids in Des Moines.
Ankeny Art Center
Do you have a little Van Gogh residing with you? Then look no further. The Ankeny Art Center offers classes to encourage and enhance imagination in children of all ages. Their classes are designed to challenge students of varying artistic abilities ages 5-15. Class projects change each week so students can master a skill and create new and challenging projects. Kids will develop and strengthen creative skills, build self-esteem, develop a sense of self-importance and individuality

Details: Four camp sessions are offered in June and July. Classes are one or two hours in length and are offered in the morning and afternoon. $40.00/members or $50.00/non-members.
Ankeny Community Theater
Many area community theaters offer performance and creative drama camps in the summer. Ankeny Community Theater is offering summer camps for boys and girls entering Kindergarten through 12th grades. Drama camps introduce theater terminology and skills while encouraging teamwork and self-expression for all ability levels. Participants attending a performance camp will have an opportunity to participate in a live performance on the last day of camp.

DanzArts! Kids Co’ Motion Dance Theater
Professional Choreographer Valerie Williams brings her annual program designed to train children ages eight to 18 in modern dance technique, composition theory and practice and production. Each day, during this one week class, students spend an hour on technique, an hour on composition and improvisation and three hours rehearsing for a final, fully produced dance performance.

Des Moines Art Center
The Des Moines Art Center offers a number of camps and classes throughout the summer for kids ages two to eighteen. They also offer family workshops. The Art Center’s classes are a great way to introduce kids to art techniques, art media and all the Art Center has to offer in a fun way. Registration is required for all classes.

Details: Summer classes are offered June through August. Camps are scheduled in the mornings and afternoons and are two to three hours in length. Costs vary, but most three hour sessions are $108.00 for members and $135 for non-members per week, plus a $10.00 materials fee. Find more info. on the Art Center’s website.
Des Moines Playhouse
Summer camp and classes at the Des Moines Playhouse are for kids aged four to eighteen+. Summer classes at the Playhouse are a great way for your little thespian to explore the world of theater.Campers experience the joy of expression with a wide variety of exciting theater styles ranging from comedy, improvisation to classical theater. Actors can hone their craft through scene study, cold reading, comedy, drama, creative movement and more.

Details: Classes are offered June through August. Depending on the campers age and the course they’re interested in camps are offered in the morning, afternoon and all day. Camp costs start at $90.00/subscribers and $100.00/non-subscribers for a two hour class for younger kids. Costs go up for longer more advanced courses. Des Moines Social Club
The Des Moines Social Club offers a wide variety of youth and family arts based classes and camps. Experience superheroes and fairytales, runaway with the circus and act up at theater camp. Classes are offered in June and July and children of all ages are welcome.

Details: All participants need to register on the Des Moines Social Club’s website. Classes range from $130.00 to $225.00 per week depending on the type of class and if it’s half day or full day.
If you have a dancer in the family, you may want to check out inspring Dance’s Summer Camps. They offer three camps for dancers ages three to 11 of all abilities. They provide fun activities like arts and crafts, while offering little ones the opportunity to work on coordination and dance skills. Campers will receive a t-shirt to wear at the final day performance.

Details: All camps are from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon. Angelina Ballerina Dance Camp for three to four year olds is July 6th -10th, $130.00. Waukee Community Education
Waukee Community Education offers camps and classes to give children opportunities to participate in a number of music camps and private lessons. Offered throughout the summer to kids in Kindergarten through 12th grade Band Bash, band lessons, musical theatre, show choir and voice lessons will keep your kiddos in harmony all summer long.
