Babysitting Classes 4 Kids in Des Moines

Caring for children is a big responsibility and one that some tweens and teens feel ready to take on. If your preteen starts showing an interest in babysitting, is responsible and loves children, then they are probably ready to babysit. One great way to make sure your child is prepared, to look after other kids, is to look into one of the many babysitting classes offered in the Des Moines area. Below is a list of organizations offering babysitting classes this fall in the metro. 

American Red Cross – Central Iowa

Watch their web-site for upcoming classes or take an on-line course.  Designed primarily for youth ages 11 and older, their online course will prepare students to be better babysitters. Topics include how to provide care for infants and children; how to stay safe; what to do in an emergency; how to choose age-appropriate activities; and how to recognize and handle a variety of behaviors. This course, which includes a final exam at the end, takes about 4 hours to complete and costs $29.

Ankeny Community Education

Designed for students in fifth grade and above, this Babysitting Clinic teaches basic first aid, how to handle emergency situations, caring for infants and young children, meal prep, playtime, what parents expect and much more. Cost of the program includes lunch, as well as, some babysitting essential items. This class is for both boys and girls and is offered November 7th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for $30.

Ankeny Parks & Recreation

Fifth and sixth graders can learn Babysitting Basics with the Ankeny Parks & Recreation Office. Becoming a better sitter, changing diapers, basic first aid and fire prevention are just a few of the objectives of this program. There is a limit of 15 participants per session. A pizza lunch and snack is included with fee – $45 resident or $54 non-residents.  The class is from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and will be offered this fall on October 12th and December 22nd.

Clive Parks & Recreation

Kids ages 11 – 14 will learn the basics of being a successful babysitter at Clive Parks & Recreation’s Babysitting Clinic. The class includes learning about behaviors, safety, child development, feeding and diapering, as well as an introduction of First Aid and CPR. Bring a sack lunch. Course fee is $55 without certification, $110 for certification.  Classes start September 21st, 2015.

Indianola Parks & Recreation

In this class presented by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach kids in fifth grade and above will learn the responsibilities of a babysitter, what parents expect, how to care for infants and young children, age-appropriate activities, safety, and how to handle emergencies. Participants who attend all three sessions will receive a certificate of participation. Class meets October 6th-8th from 3:45 to 5:45 pm.  $31 or $26 with resident discount.

Johnston Community Education

Fifth through eighth graders can gain skills to be a great babysitter and Johnston’s Babysitting Clinic.  Topics include caring for infants and young children, age-appropriate activities, safety, and how to handle emergencies.  The class is offered on December 5th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and costs $30.

Urbandale Community Education

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training course is to provide youth who want to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. Designed for youth ages 11 to 15, the course helps participants develop leadership skills, build a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and guide children’s behavior. Courses are offered Session 1: October 17; Session 2: November 14; and Session 3: December 12 at 9:00am – 4:00pm. Tuition is $85.00.

Urbandale Parks & Recreation

This Red Cross Babysitting Course gives youth ages 11 to 15 years old the knowledge and confidence to care for infants and school-age children. Combining video, activities, hands-on skills training and discussion for a complete learning experience.  The class is scheduled for October 3rd and costs $85.

Waukee Community Education

Safe sitter prepares 11 to 14 year olds for the responsibilities or nurturing and protecting children.  This class is scheduled for October 17th and November 7th and costs $49.

Waukee Parks & Recreation

Red Cross Babysitting Training is for participants 11 years old and up.  The course is offered on October 26th from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and costs $75.

West Des Moines Community Education

I’m Taking Care…Kids in grades 5-8 will learn skills needed to be a good babysitter.  Students will receive a booklet and a certificate at completion. Co-sponsored and taught by Camp Fire. Session 1: Saturdays, 10/10-10/17 and Session 2: Saturdays, 11/14-11/21.  Both classes are from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and cost $36.
