Open to the Public @ Science Center of Iowa

The new SCI experience is modified to limit crowds and reduce the spread of germs. Precautions include timed ticketing, health screenings upon entry and restricted access to “high-touch” exhibits. SCI will be open only on weekends, and advance tickets will be sold in three timeslots to ensure space for distancing and time for enhanced sanitation.

Hours & Ticketing:

  • ALL visitors must purchase tickets in advance on the SCI website
    • Members are FREE but still need to reserve tickets in advance
  • Ticketing Timeslots (both Saturday and Sunday): A limited number of tickets will be sold for each of these two-hour timeslots. Visitors will be checked in at the start of the timeslot and will be asked to exit at the end of the two hours. SCI staff will then clean the facility before the next group is allowed to enter.
    • 9:00-11:00 am
    • 11:30 am-1:30 pm
    • 2:00-4:00 pm
  • Ticket sales are live now at www.sciowa.org/tickets
    • Members: Log in using your member ID to reserve your free admission.

Masks (Required):

Face masks have been shown to reduce the spread of aerosol droplets from individuals who may be asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic. Face coverings are required for all visitors ages 5 and up as well as SCI staff. If you don’t have a face mask, one will be provided.

Health Screenings:

Before entering the building, all visitors will be asked to show their tickets (printed or on a mobile device), have their temperature checked and answer a few health-related questions.

Exhibit Access:

As a hands-on science center, many of our exhibit experiences are “high-touch.” In these initial opening phases, we are limiting access to these spaces.

Self-Guided Tours @ The Jordan House

Tour the historic Jordan House, the only central Iowa location of the Underground Railroad open to the public.  Every Friday & Sunday at 11AM or 1PM you can tour the house with your family or friend group. All ages welcome, but children aged 10 and up will appreciate it more.

Painting Party @ Painting with a Twist

Set your kid’s creativity free with a new twist on fun at Painting with a Twist in Urbandale. Our professional artists guide children during each painting party to create a finished work of art they can proudly hang at home or give to a loved one!

Sunday Tunes @ Summerset Winery

Summerset Winery has been hosting live music concerts on Sunday afternoons for the past 20 years. Rain or shine the music goes on. Weather permitting, the bands will perform outside but in the winter or on rainy days we bring the music inside.

Concerts take place every Sunday, May-October, and once or twice a month November-April.

Kids are welcome and FREE.

Family Quest: Scattergories on the Library Lawn @ Indianola Public Library

Re-Opening @ Des Moines Art Center

We are thrilled to reopen our doors to you, our visitors!

In planning for reopening, the health and well-being of visitors, members, students, and staff has been our top priority. The Art Center is taking numerous steps to ensure the safety of its visitors and staff. They include:

Timed, ticketed entry. The Art Center continues to offer free admission for all; however, tickets for entry are required so that proper social distancing within the galleries can be maintained. To ensure visitors are able to enter the museum at their desired time, it is recommended that tickets are reserved online in advance. Reservations can be made by clicking HERE or the button below.

Wayfinding. For the foreseeable future, there is a designated path through the museum, designed to ensure visitors are able to access galleries while maintaining social distancing guidelines. This path will be shared on the Art Center’s website soon and reinforced during visits with on-site signage and graphics.

Cleanliness. Facilities teams have implemented an increased cleaning and sanitizing plan, especially in frequent contact areas and travel paths.

Masks. Art Center staff is required to wear a mask at all times when outside individual offices. Visitors will be required to wear masks while in the Art Center.

A phased approach. While the Art Center galleries are open to the public, for the safety of visitors and staff, all indoor, public programming is currently on hold until the fall. This includes docent-led tours. The Shop at the Art Center and Tangerine at the Art Center are finalizing phased reopening plans beginning in late summer.

In planning for reopening, the health and well-being of visitors, members, students, and staff has been our top priority. The Art Center is taking numerous steps to ensure the safety of its visitors and staff. They include:

Timed, ticketed entry. The Art Center continues to offer free admission for all; however, tickets for entry are required so that proper social distancing within the galleries can be maintained. To ensure visitors are able to enter the museum at their desired time, it is recommended that tickets are reserved online in advance. Reservations can be made by clicking HERE or the button below.

Wayfinding. For the foreseeable future, there is a designated path through the museum, designed to ensure visitors are able to access galleries while maintaining social distancing guidelines. This path will be shared on the Art Center’s website soon and reinforced during visits with on-site signage and graphics.

Cleanliness. Facilities teams have implemented an increased cleaning and sanitizing plan, especially in frequent contact areas and travel paths.

Masks. Art Center staff is required to wear a mask at all times when outside individual offices. Visitors will be required to wear masks while in the Art Center.

A phased approach. While the Art Center galleries are open to the public, for the safety of visitors and staff, all indoor, public programming is currently on hold until the fall. This includes docent-led tours. The Shop at the Art Center and Tangerine at the Art Center are finalizing phased reopening plans beginning in late summer.

  • Reserved time to enter the museum
  • Access to all special and permanent collection exhibitions
