Butterfly Blizzard @ Reiman Gardens

Come in from the cold to experience a different kind of blizzard – a butterfly blizzard in Reiman Gardens’ Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing! Take advantage of this rare opportunity to release your very own butterfly, just-emerged from its chrysalis, and waiting in a container for its first flight in the Butterfly Wing. An amazing nature moment for young and old alike! While here, partake in fun, themed crafts and sip hot cocoa.

 

 

Public Tour @ The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates

THE WORLD FOOD PRIZE HALL OF LAUREATES tells a story in every room – from the building’s rich history as the Des Moines public library, to the Foundation’s celebrated agricultural and humanitarian pioneers there is something for every visitor.

Built in 1903, this century-old building has been restored into a museum that celebrates those who have dedicated their lives to fighting hunger around the world. The Hall of Laureates is a beautiful space of learning and collaboration, and we welcome you to visit.

The Hall is open to the public on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Admission is free of charge, and visitors have the opportunity to take a guided tour or explore the building on their own. Private and group tours are also available.

Tuesdays:
Guided tours at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m., 1:30 p.m.
Please arrive 10-15 minutes early

Saturdays:
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
There are no guided tours on Saturdays. Docents are stationed in the building to provide information and education.

The Hall of Laureates is closed during all federal holiday weekends, including New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving week and Christmas. The Hall of Laureates is also closed during World Food Prize Week.

Goldie’s Kids Club @ The State Historical Museum

Join Goldie the Goldfinch on the first Saturday of every month to learn about Iowa history and solve some of its mysteries! Through hands-on activities, artifact examinations, exhibit tours and more, children (ages 8-12) and their families can explore the past… like never before.

“History Mystery” programs encourage participants to examine historic artifacts to determine how they were used and who might have used them.

“Innovative Iowans” programs involve interactive activities that connect history with STEAM education – science, technology, engineering, art and math.

All of the programs are free, but advance registration is required for the hour-long programs. Each child must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program.

Bring the family, and enjoy a ride from the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad’s depot to the North Pole (and return).  En route, you will hear the story of Santa’s Scenic Valley Ride, sing holiday songs, and take part in other fun, family activities.  Also on board, you will be served hot chocolate and a cookie, and children will get to meet (and receive a special memento from) Santa himself.  Be sure to arrive in your pajamas, and experience what has become a tradition for families from across Iowa, and beyond. Set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, IN, the musical follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts: an Official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Rebuffed at every turn with a similar echoing response, Ralphie plots numerous schemes to achieve his desperate desire for the coveted BB gun. All the iconic scenes from the movie are here: Ralphie’s friend, Flick, getting his tongue stuck to the flagpole; his brother, Randy, getting dressed in his snowsuit; the bullies, Farkus and Dill; the leg lamp award; the bunny suit; the Chinese restaurant; Christmas dinner; and many others.

Dazzling in The District Holiday Stroll @ Prairie Trail

Dazzling in The District Holiday Stroll 2019 is Saturday, December 7th in The District at Prairie Trail in Ankeny. This is the third year for the Dazzling Holiday Stroll and it promises to be bigger and better than ever!

SANTA will be here!

Stroll through The District with Santa as he stops along the way for the most amazing photos ops, cookie decorating, letter writing, storytime, arts & crafts, brain games, and more. It’s all free admission, free parking and fun for the whole family.

Your favorite shops and restaurants in The District are getting ready!

Kids, try to find the Dazzling Reindeer hiding in each shop and enter to win special prize drawings.

Stroll along with holiday music.
Take a ride on a Horse and Carriage through The District.

Visit the historic Flynn Mansion, where you can help decorate the tree and participate in holiday traditions of a Midwestern family in 1875. In the Church of the Land, enjoy decorating Christmas cookies and sipping hot cider during breaks from dancing to live music. Bundle up for a horse-drawn wagon ride in town, head over to the Advocate Print Shop for a holiday printing project, visit the Schafer Drug Store for a sniff of Christmas spices, and stop into Mrs. Elliot’s Millinery to see the latest in warm winter hats. Take a (free) photo of your kids with Santa in the decorated Visitor Center, and shop for unique gifts in the MarketPlace Museum Store (open 1:00-5:30PM). Living History Farms is the perfect place to enjoy the simple traditions of the holiday season!
