Teacher Appreciation Day @ Living History Farms

Living History Farms says thank you to all of the teachers who put in the time and effort to bring learning to life for their students. If you’ve never been to Living History Farms with your students, come out to preview what the museum has to offer. Or if you’ve already visited many times with students, enjoy exploring at a leisurely pace. Education staff will be on hand to lead short informational sessions on incorporating an educational visit or program into your classroom. Teachers admitted free; family members pay regular admission fee. Teachers must present school ID to receive free admission.

Ioway Culture Day @ Living History Farms

The people of the Ioway nation were some of Iowa’s first farmers! Explore this Native American culture which gave Iowa its name. Visit our 1700 Ioway Farm where farm staff will present hands-on activities to showcase how the Ioway built their homes, prepared food, and farmed. Guest presenters will share their own personal expertise in Ioway culture and technology. Be sure to allow time to ride the tractor cart out to the 1700 Ioway Farm! The last tractor cart to reach the Ioway Farm will depart at 2pm.

Event activities are included in regular admission to Living History Farms.

Election Day @ Living History Farms

It’s Election Day in Walnut Hill. The 1875 town makes a decision at the polls and you’re invited to help get out the vote! Join candidates for an 1875 style mayoral debate, try giving a stump speech and cast your ballot. All activities are included in regular admission to Living History Farms.

Grain Harvest @ Living History Farms

Living History Farms’ “original” community event! Get your hands dirty and help our interpreters bring in this year’s grain harvest, using hand power, horsepower, and steam. Witness it all as you hear the smash of the flail and the roar of the steam-powered thresher. Demonstrations will be weather dependent. Event activities are included in regular admission to Living History Farms.

Fido on the Farms @ Living History Farms

Living History Farms welcomes dogs to the museum any day of the season, but on this day, we have several special activities planned to celebrate our best furry friends! Bring your well-behaved pup to tour the museum in the morning and enjoy an afternoon in Walnut Hill with activities and demonstrations. Your pooch will have a doggone  good time meeting local trainers, sampling healthy dog treats, and getting a one-of-a-kind canine caricature from Sudden Art. Enjoy demonstrations throughout the day by an Urbandale K9 officer and the Central Iowa Kennel Club. Dogs must be on a standard (non-retractable) leash and must remain outside buildings and away from livestock.

Open 9am-4pm. Event activities are from 11am-4pm and are included in regular admission to Living History Farms.

Applefest @ Living History Farms

New extended hours! 9am-5:30pm

Celebrate the arrival of Fall in the 1875 town of Walnut Hill during our annual Applefest! Try your hand at stirring the copper kettle of apple butter, take your turn cranking the cider press, and try some tasty apple fritters. Family fun also includes apple bowling, cooking demonstrations, bobbing for apples, and a special visit from Snow White. Watch the Walnut Hill Bluestockings compete in an 1870s-rules baseball game at 1:30pm. Showcase your coveted family recipes in our Apple Pie Contest! Apples, pies, fudge and more will be available for purchase from Iowa Orchard. Event activities are included in regular admission to Living History Farms.

Heritage Skills Expo @ Living History Farms

Join Living History Farms’ crafters and farmers for a celebration of Iowa’s rich fall folk life traditions! Watch specialty craftsmen such as blacksmiths and broom makers create their wares. Discover unique historic skills, such as wood-stove cooking, handcrafts, and working with draft animals. Visit with guest demonstrators sharing their talents in traditional arts and crafts. Cheer on the Walnut Hill Bluestockings baseball team in their final match of the season at 1:30pm. Kitchens, barn yards, and workshops across the museum will bustle with activities and fun.

Event activities are included in regular admission to Living History Farms.

Victorian Funeral @ Living History Farms

Open 9am-4pm, Funeral procession begins at 1 pm

In 1875, the funeral was a pageant of honored traditions! Families gathered to find joy in a public celebration of a life well lived. Join with historic interpreters as they celebrate the life and honor the death of a fictional Walnut Hill resident with a re-created funeral. Visit the Tangen home, prepared with a period style coffin and funeral drapery. At 1pm, walk in the funeral procession led by a horse-drawn hearse to New Hope Cemetery for a moving memorial service.

Event activities are included with regular admission to Living History Farms.

Living History Farms Family Christmas @ Living History Farms

Join us for a day of holiday traditions filled with Christmas cheer! Visit the historic Flynn Mansion, where you can help decorate the tree and participate in holiday traditions of a Midwestern family in 1875. In the Church of the Land, enjoy decorating Christmas cookies and sipping hot cider during breaks from dancing to live music. Bundle up for a horse-drawn wagon ride in town, head over to the Advocate Print Shop for a holiday printing project, visit the Schafer Drug Store for a sniff of Christmas spices, and stop into Mrs. Elliot’s Millinery to see the latest in warm winter hats. Take a (free) photo of your kids with Santa in the decorated Visitor Center, and shop for unique gifts in the MarketPlace Museum Store (open 1:00-5:30PM). Living History Farms is the perfect place to enjoy the simple traditions of the holiday season!
