Even though it’s the shortest month, there are still plenty of awesome family activities happening this February in Des Moines. We made sure to highlight a range of options, whether you have toddlers, elementary schoolers, or tweens. And, because February is the month for L-O-V-E, we rounded up Family Dances and Valentine’s Day Activities taking place this month.

February 1st   

Celebrate the Lunar New Year, the most important festival in Chinese society, at the Waukee Public Library. CultureALL Ambassador Phoebe Liang D’Alessandro will share traditions surrounding the celebration of Lunar New Year in China.  Registration required.

Discover the history and participate in the process of Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses as you sample baked goods during Living History Farms’ Caucus for Cookies. On-line tickets available.

February 8th

Join Reiman Gardens for their annual Orchid Fest. Exotic orchids in a variety of species and colors will be on display and available for purchase.

Des Moines Parks and Recreation is teaming up with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Fellowship Baptist Church to host Bald Eagle Day. S.O.A.R. (Saving Our Avian Resources) will present a live education ambassador bald eagle and there will be spotting scopes on the SE 6th Street Bridge to assist with viewing some of the wild Bald Eagles in Des Moines.

February 13th

Based in the coastal resort town of Biarritz in Southern France, 22 gorgeous dancers take the stage in “Ballet Biarritz: Cinderella” — it’s unlike any other version of the classic fairy tale that you have seen before.  On stage at the Des Moines Civic Center.

February 14th – 16th

Walk through the Cretaceous period, the Jurassic Period and The Triassic period and experience for yourself what it was like to be among living, breathing dinosaurs during Jurassic Quest at the Iowa Events Center.  

February 15th

The Central Iowa Figure Skating Club will host a FREE Saturday Skating Spree in Indianola. They will help you learn to skate, will perform and host a skate swap – bring your old unwanted skates, and hopefully go home with another pair!

February 21st

An adaptation of Jack London’s classic, this movie features Harrison Ford and Karen Gillen in a tale of a dog stolen from his home in California and sold to freight haulers in the Yukon. ”Call of the Wild” hits Des Moines Theatres this month.

Join Dallas County Conservation during Winter Star Gazing, Constellations, and Stories to explore the wonders of the winter night skies.  Preregistration is required for this FREE program.

Yes, you read that right, February 29th!  2020 is a Leap Year!  Be sure to enjoy the extra day doing something fun with your family!
