There’s a lot more places to hear live music in Des Moines now than there used to be. However, between the free-flowing alcohol and late night hours, most of them aren’t what you’d call family-friendly. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.:) And, of course you can go to the large concert arenas and venues, but those can get expensive, especially if you’re paying for several tickets. Following is a list of small local venues that feature live music, are inexpensive and family friendly.

Java Joe’s serves up live music several nights a week. Local, independent and nationally touring performers can all be seen here. Most entertainment is FREE. Some concerts require tickets that can be purchased online. Check out their website for upcoming events.

Have dinner and listen to live music at the laid back Ritual Cafe. Adults and kids will both love this homey vegetarian joint. Check out their website to see which local or touring act will be playing next. Usually there’s no cover, but tips are always encouraged.

Music lovers can hear live music every Sunday at Summerset Winery. Rain or shine the music goes on. Bands perform outside weather permitting. Check out the events section of their website for a list of upcoming acts.
