There’s a lot more places to hear live music in Des Moines now than there used to be. However, between the free-flowing alcohol and late night hours, most of them aren’t what you’d call family-friendly. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.:) And, of course you can go to the large concert arenas and venues, but those can get expensive, especially if you’re paying for several tickets. Following is a list of small local venues that feature live music, are inexpensive and family friendly.
Java Joe’s Coffeehouse

Java Joe’s serves up live music several nights a week. Local, independent and nationally touring performers can all be seen here. Most entertainment is FREE. Some concerts require tickets that can be purchased online. Check out their website for upcoming events.
