Looking to slow things down and indulge in tasty treats? Visit Grinnell. No matter your ideal out-of-town, but still nearby destination, these DSM towns are sure to make for an awesome holiday break excursion for you and your family!

Before heading out, be sure to check out Greater Des Moines Partnership’s #DSMLocal Resources that will help you discover hidden gems and new favorite communities within the Greater Des Moines region.

Here is where you can find spots rich with history, shopping, and delicious food in Greater Des Moines (DSM):

East

The eight communities of Altoona, Bondurant, Carlisle, Grinnell, Knoxville, Newton, Pella and Pleasant Hill are a hub for farm-fresh food, shopping, and, of course, family-friendly entertainment. Visit downtown Grinnell and stop by Grin City Bakery for a sweet treat. Spend the morning shopping at cute shops like Giggle & Bow’s, a children’s boutique, and Beckman Gallery & Gifts, both of which are located on Main Street. Meander toward the Metro along Highway 6 to Newton and stop for lunch at Sombrero Mexican Restaurant and then try your hand at axe-throwing and other fun family-friendly activities at the Thunderdome.

North + Central

Head to the north and central areas of the region for more to explore. With delicious food, great breweries, and shoppable streets, the lively communities of Ankeny, Des Moines and Polk City are all perfect places for a fun family outing. Start your day with breakfast at Frutta Bowls or Main Street Café & Bakery in Ankeny before dropping the kids off at Kids Create in Polk City for Winter Break Day Camp. Head back to Ankeny for some shopping at Charlotte Louise Mercantile, Nook & Nest, and Wrapped. Finish out the day by treating the kids to ice cream at the Creamery in Polk City after picking them up from camp.
