May is National Bike Month and the Des Moines Bike Collective organizes and sponsors several family friendly activities and events to celebrate the bicycle all month long. So pack up the rugrats, don the helmets and pedal on over to one of these fun bike rides in Des Moines.
Mayor’s Annual Ride and Run
On Saturday, April 15th, join the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department for the 2017 Mayor’s Annual Ride and Run. Mayor T. M. Franklin Cownie will lead the ride and proceeds from the event will go towards area trail improvement. This year’s ride will consist of one 23 mile route. Helmets are required for all riders and children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.
6th Annual Urbandale Mayor’s Bike Ride
The Urbandale Mayor’s Bike ride will take place on Sunday, May 7th, 2017. Bikers will loop around Walker Johnston Park, 9000 Douglas Ave, and then head out on the trails and roads of Urbandale. The bike ride starts at 1:00 pm and route maps will be provided during registration.
Mayor’s Bike Ride in Johnston
Join Mayor Paula Dierenfeld for the Mayor’s Bike Ride in Johnston, a fun ride on City trails, beginning Friday, May 11th at 11:30 am. The three-mile loop begins at the Johnston Hy-Vee, located at 5750 Merle Hay Road. The ride ends with a delicious lunch provided by Hy-Vee.
Ankeny’s Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride
Join Ankeny Mayor Gary Lorenz at 8:30 am on Satuday, May 13th for Ankeny’s Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride. Two routes have been chosen for the event: a 15-mile route to the Oasis located on the High Trestle Trail, great for the avid bicyclist; and a 3.5-mile family friendly route, also utilizing the High Trestle Trail and local community trail connections. No registration is required and all participants should wear a properly fitted bike helmet.
West Des Moines Mayor’s Ride
Join the City of West Des Moines’ Mayor, Steve Gaer, for a morning ride on Saturday, May 13th, 2017. Three different routes are set for you to enjoy the City’s cycling amenities. Enjoy a recreational 4 mile trail loop or challenge yourself on the 10 or 24 mile on-street route which takes you through various terrains and parts of West Des Moines. All routes start and stop at City Hall at 9:00 am. Registered participants receive an event t-shirt. Fee: $10.
Pleasant Hill Pre-K Art Bike Month Project
Celebrate Bike Month at the Pleasant Hill Public Library by learning bicycle safety skills while creating a collaborative project. On May 17th and 18th, children age 2-6 can learn appropriate safety skills to navigate the dos and don’ts of riding a bicycle. Helmets will be required and parent participation is recommended. This is a FREE event and will take place each day at 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
Pedal the Prairie
Roll over to the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge for a spring bike ride on Saturday, May 20th at 9:00 am. Ride the paved Prairie Parkway Bike Trail and see bison and elk, cycle amongst native wildflowers, toss seed bombs, meet live animals, hike the trails, and explore their Visitor Center. Snacks, refreshments, games & activities provided! All ages & skill levels welcome.
Bondurant Mayor’s Bike Ride
The Mayor of Bondurant invites cyclists to enjoy a spring ride on the City’s trails on Saturday, May 27th, 2017 at 10:00am. The ride will start at the Proch Swings and Fireflies Project.
