My 5th grade son recently read the book The Hobbit, so he and I were both thrilled to be invited to Des Moines Young Artists’ Theatre’s stage production! The Hobbit, a children’s play by Patricia Gray adapted from the book by J.R.R. Tolkien, takes the audience along on a magical adventure, where humble Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is urged by the wizard Gandalf to leave his cozy shire to journey through wild lands, deep caves and dense forests with a band of dwarves to help kill a vicious dragon and find the gold he’s been hoarding.
The Hobbit, currently on stage at the Kum & Go Theater in the Des Moines Social Club, is a great production for the entire family! The show runs 90 minutes, with an intermission, so it’s perfect for younger kids—even if they haven’t read the book or seen the movie. Tweens, teens and adults who grew up with Tolkien’s books will especially enjoy the play. The dramatic costumes, shadowy and mystical set, puppets, and fantastic adventure make this a can’t miss summer show for Des Moines Kids!
The Hobbit is directed by guest directors Kathy Pingel and Ron Ziegler with scenic design by Tim Wisgerhof, costume design by Nicholas Amundson, light design by Alex Snodgrass, sound design by Mark Toebben, fight direction by Susie Irish and stage managed by Alice Robertson. The cast of 29 includes a blend of adults and students representing 15 Central Iowa schools. In addition, about half of the actors are making their DMYAT debut.
