It’s hard to believe March is almost here, hopefully bringing with it warmer days and signs of spring all around Des Moines. One thing that doesn’t change with the season is our overflowing events calendar, but we’re making it easy for you to hit all the fun, spring-inspired events, including St. Patrick’s and Spring Break events and activities this month.

March 1st & 2nd

Don’t miss the Annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships.  Des Moines will be hosting the individuals and teams shooting to be at the top of their bracket.  Visit Catch Des Moines for the schedule and additional information.

March 2nd

Read Across America Day is a day to celebrate reading and it takes place on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The Indianola Library Foundation will host a Dr. Seuss Breakfast – a Family event at 9:00 am.  Registration is required.

Mother and Son Fun Night hosted by Des Moines Parks and Recreation. Enjoy live animals from the Blank Park Zoo, hop in the video gaming truck, compete in an inflatable obstacle course, learn boxing lessons with the police PAL Boxing Club instructors in a real ring and much more. When you run out of fuel, get a piece of pizza and a drink to bounce back into the action. Parents, relatives, guardians and/or role models are welcome to attend the event with their children. Register by March 1st.

March 9th

The Barnstormers will kick-off their home opener against the Green Bay Blizzard. The 2019 season brings new challenges for the Barnstormers as they fight to defend the title of United Bowl Champions. The team’s schedule will feature new opponents and old rivalries.

March 10th

The Central Iowa Wind Ensemble brings you a concert of “Celebrating Women’s History Month”. This concert will feature music written by female composers as well as pieces inspired by events in women’s history. This FREE family friendly event will be held in the historic and beautiful Scottish Rite Consistory Auditorium.

Daylight Savings Time officially begins at 2:00 am, so be sure to set clocks ahead.  Less sleep is a bit of a bummer but more sunshine totally rocks!

March 19th

Hosted by Ankeny Parks and Recreation, All-Day Athlete Lock-In, is designed to expose boys and girls to a multitude of recreational opportunities during one-day. Fundamentals and participation will take place in basketball, volleyball, baseball/softball, football, soccer and dodgeball. Athletes will finish the day by watching a selected sports movie. Registration required.

March 20th

On this “equal day” join Dallas County Conservation for their Leopold Sand County Almanac Series Essays: The Geese Return, Burr Oak , & Sky Dance with Spring Equinox Sunset at Hanging Rock.  Registration is required for this FREE program.

March 29th

From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton, the all-new grand live-action adventure “Dumbo” expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight. See the amazing flying elephant this month at a movie theatre in Des Moines. Rated PG.

March 30th

The DSM Book Festival, a new event celebrating stories, books and authors, is coming to Downtown Des Moines this month. The FREE event will feature internationally-acclaimed authors, book club discussions led by featured commentators, hands-on activities, children’s programming, food, drink, live music and more.

Wakonda Christian Church Preschool will host a Spring Family Formal. Join them for an evening of dancing (live DJ), raffles, refreshments, and prizes. You don’t want to miss this!
