Mountain Biking Trails for Young Riders in Des Moines

Tree-lined paved rides in central Iowa make for great outdoor adventures, but the Des Moines area also has plenty of trails for kids looking to build skills on their mountain bikes. While the idea of mountain biking in the flat heartland seems incompatible, you may be surprised to find out that there is a lot of good mountain biking opportunities right here in the Metro.  Whether you want challenging or casual, insanity or serenity, the region has a trail for you. Here’s where you can find mountain biking trails in the Des Moines Area:

Banner Lakes (at Summerset State Park)

Summerset State Park is located on IA Highway 69 about 10 miles south of Des Moines. A premier mountain biking trail system is located at Banner Lakes. It features over five miles of trails that provide a variety of challenges and opportunities for beginning to advanced riders.

Ewing Park Mountain Bike Trails

This large City park on the southside of downtown presents two great options for local mountain bikers.  Traditionalists will enjoy a cross country jaunt along a wooded trail and riders looking for more of a rush will enjoy racing along the flow trails in the north end of the park (next to the BMX track).Mountain Biking Trails for Young Riders in Des Moines – dsm4kids.com

Grandview Park

This historic park on Des Mones’ eastside is home to a mountain biking loop, that’s particularly good for beginners.  The wide singletrack offers trail sections with some progression for new riders to test their skills.

Greenwood Park (Center Trail)

Des Moines’ oldest park is home to some of the best modern-day mountain biking trails in the area.  Greenwood Park is a pass-through point for the Center Trails, which is 13 miles of trail segments perfect for thrill seekers. The trails are fast, flowing single track through woods with the Hillside Trail in the Park providing some of Des Moines largest climbs.

Sycamore Trails

The 6.5 mile mountain bike trail will take you through some of the most wild and scenic areas of the Des Moines metro area. This is an enjoyable ride through relatively flat terrain, but be aware of bumps, curves, and slick spots which could cause accidents if you don’t pay attention.
