National Bike Month Events Happening this May in Des Moines

With National Bike Month just around the corner (May 1-31), it’s a great time to dust off your bikes, trailers, and training wheels and take part in this month-long celebration! To help you and your little ones get pedaling, we’ve put together a list of family-friendly bicycling events going on around the Des Moines metro. So turn off the TV, put away the iPad, and get outside with the fam and ride!

National Bike Month Activities and Events for Kids and Families in Des Moines

ICubs Pedal to the Park

Everyone who bikes to a Sunday afternoon Iowa Cubs game can get a ticket and promo item for only $9, or a ticket, promo item and 20-ounce Sierra Nevada beer for $15. The deal is only valid at the Bike World Bike Gate at Principal Park on gameday. The Bike World Bike Gate (featuring secured bicycle parking) is located on the southwest side of the stadium, next to the box office.

Date: April 14 & 28; May 12 & 19; June 9 & 23; July 7 & 28; August 11 & 25 and September 1, 2019

Cost: $9 per person

Tuesdays on the Trail

Cyclists of all skill levels and ages are welcome to meet up at the Raccoon River Valley Trail: Waukee Trailhead on Tuesdays. The average ride distance is 25 miles. This is a no-drop paved trail ride (you won’t get left behind! And is hosted by Bike World.

Date: April 16 – July 9, 2019 at 5:30 pm

Location: Raccoon River Valley Trailhead, Waukee

Cost: FREE

Food Truck Fundo

Meet up at Bike World in West Des Moines and depart for dinner/dessert at a rotating selection of food trucks. This is a casual group ride every that takes place every other Thursday.  The destination depends on the week with an average distance of 20 miles. Cyclists of all skill levels and ages are welcome.

Date: EVERY OTHER Thursday, April 18-July 11, 2019 at 5:30 pm.

Location: Bike World, 5003 EP True Pkwy, West Des Moines

Cost: FREE

Mayor’s Annual Ride and Run

Join the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department for the 2018 Mayor’s Annual Ride and Run.  Mayor Frank Cownie will lead the ride assisted by The DM Register’s Dream Team and proceeds from the event will go towards area trail improvement. This year’s ride will consist of one 23-mile route. Helmets are required for all riders and children must be accompanied by an adult.  Registration is required. 

Date: Saturday, April 20, 2019.  The One-Mile Kids Run starts at 9:00 am and the bike ride starts at 10:00 am.

Location: 1551 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Des Moines

Cost: Adults 18+ $35 before April 18 and $50 on the day of the event; Ages 5-18 $5; and Children 5 and under FREE

Clive Public Library’s Bike and Book Contest

Join the festivities of National Bike Month by riding your bike to the Clive Public Library all of May! For each day you ride to the library, check in at the circulation desk to fill out a raffle ticket and you will be entered in a prize drawing. Please limit one raffle ticket per person per day during the month of May.

Date: May 1 – May 31, 2019 during library hours.

Location: Clive Public Library 1900 NW 114th St, Clive

Cost: FREE

Bike Collection Event

The Des Moines Bicycle Collective (a non-profit organization) will be at the Urbandale City Hall parking lot collecting your used bicycles instead having to throw them out. The bikes will then be fixed and recycled in the Polk County area.

Date: Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 8:00 am to 12:00 Noon

Location: Urbandale City Hall, 3600 86th Street, Urbandale

Cost: FREE

National Bike Month Events Happening this May in Des Moines –

Urbandale Mayor’s Bike Ride

Join Mayor Bob Andeweg at Lions Park Shelter House for a fun ride through the City of Urbandale. Cyclists will be able to choose from three different routes for the bike ride. There will also be several FREE kid’s activities including bike helmet fitting, bicycle licensing, crafts, and games! (You do not need to participate in the Bike Ride to enjoy the kids’ activities at this event.)

Date: Sunday, May 5, 2019. Pancake Breakfast and kids’ activities from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with the ride beginning at 1:00 pm.

Location: Lion’s Park Shelter, 72nd & Aurora Avenue, Urbandale 

Cost: FREE. Donations will be accepted to help build Urbandale’s All-Inclusive Playground.

Mayor’s Bike Ride in Johnston

Join Johnston Mayor Paula Dierenfeld for a fun ride on City trails. The three-mile loop starts at Hy-Vee, 5750 Merle Hay Rd, Johnston and ends at the large shelter at Terra Park. Free lunch will be served for those participating in the ride.

Ankeny’s Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride

Join Ankeny Mayor Gary Lorenz for Ankeny’s Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride. Two routes have been chosen for the event: a 15-mile route to the Oasis located on the High Trestle Trail, great for the avid bicyclist; and a 3.5-mile family friendly route, also utilizing the High Trestle Trail and local community trail connections. No registration is required, and all participants should wear a properly fitted bike helmet.

Cost: FREE

West Des Moines Mayor’s Ride

Join the City of West Des Moines’ Mayor, Steve Gaer, for a morning of cycling in the City of West Des Moines. Different routes will be available to accommodate all ages and abilities. All routes start and end at City Hall. (Routes and distances subject to change.) All registered participants will receive an event t-shirt.

Date: Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 9:00 am

Location: WDM City Hall, 4200 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines

Cost: $10 per rider

Pleasant Hill Tikes and Bikes

Children between the ages of 2-6 are invited to experience bicycle safety education. Participants will learn age appropriate safety skills to navigate the do’s and don’ts of riding a bicycle.  Helmets will be required and parent participation is recommended.  This is a FREE event, but registration is required.

Indianola Bike Fest

Free, family friendly fun on Indianola’s town square. Come for the bike safety course, giant tricycle races, games and more!  We’ll also celebrate RAGBRAI coming to town.
