My son and I were super excited to see Newsies for the first time last night at the Des Moines Civic Center. And, the show did not disappoint. If you and your kids like musicals, Newsies is a theatrical production that you won’t want to miss. Its incredible music, choreography, and plot will leave Des Moines families wanting more.
If you’re not familiar with Disney’s Newsies, the musical is based on the true story of the 1899 Newsboy Strike in New York. It’s a rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged “newsies” who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.
You may have seen the movie, which Disney released in 1992. The film was meant to be a revival of the live-action musical genre. And, although it wasn’t a big hit when it was in the theatres, its outstanding score and phenomenal dance numbers made it a fan favorite, and it quickly gained a cult following. Christian Bale plays Jack Kelly, need I say more?!?
Kids will enjoy the heck out of Disney’s vibrant and harmony-filled adaptation of underdogs seizing the day. Newsies is for boys what Annie is for girls. Athletic dance moves, upbeat music and comic performances make this musical a great early Broadway outing for young theatergoers.
The show is great for the whole family and is recommended for ages six and up. To find more information about the show, visit the show’s website. The Civic Center will also host a post-show Q&A Session on January 15th, 2016, where you can stay after the show and hear directly from cast members.
If you are wondering what you and the kids should wear, people go dressed up and dressed down to the Civic Center. Depending on where you park, you may need to walk a ways. I suggest dressing kids in outfits that are comfortable and not too fussy. Last night was frigid, so we dressed for warmth rather than for style.
Winner of the 2012 Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best Choreography, Newsies will be headlining at the Civic Center for a limited engagement now through January 17th, 2016. The show is two hours and thirty minutes long, including one intermission. If you are looking to purchase some Newsies merchandise, nobody knows how to market better than Disney, there are several items for sale.
Tickets for the show range in price from $35.00-$132.00. All guests require a ticket, regardless of age. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Des Moines Performing Arts box office at (515) 246-2300 or online at http://www.desmoinesperformingarts.org/. Tickets are also available through all Ticketmaster outlets. The Civic Center is located at 221 Walnut Street, Des Moines. For more information, visit http://www.newsiesthemusical.com/.
