Rusty Stars Alpacas

Rusty Stars Alpacas

By Natalie Maughan

If you haven’t been out to see Rusty Stars Alpacas you are missing out. This little farm run by Aron and Kari Shultz is like chicken soup for the soul. These fuzzy furry alpacas are just what is needed during this time of isolation and uncertainty. They are a smile and a cuddle, free of judgement and prejudice.

After living in Colorado for a few years, the Schultz’ decided to head (back) to Iowa and live their dream of having a farm.  After doing their research they decided alpacas would be the best fit for their farm, considering they both still hold full-time jobs. They had a dream to provide a farm where they could educate the public on a lesser-known farm animal and show others the benefits this breed of animal can provide.

Alpaca Fiber

Alpaca fur, known as fiber, can be sheered and turned into yarn for knitting and crochet. They have a friend who crochets the fibers into beautiful hats and mittens and sells them in their gift shop. Each article includes a tag letting you know which alpaca the fibers came from. Such a great gift idea for cold Iowa winter months. Make sure to check out the gift shop for other fun gift ideas for birthdays or holidays.

Farm Hours

They opened their farm to the public a few years ago.  On Saturdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm you can visit the farm to pet, cuddle, feed and admire these adorable creatures.  Aron and Kari are there first-hand to visit with you and educate you on all things alpacas. They love sharing their knowledge with others and helping others gain an appreciation for these animals. Make sure to check their Facebook page for occasional closings such as around the holidays.

My family visited their farm one Saturday in August and my kids were instantly enthralled. They went from one alpaca to the next to the next petting and observing the animals’ mild-mannered dispositions.  They figured out which ones are more calm and which ones like to be pet the most. There was even a tractor in the play pen area that my 2-year-old son found absolutely fascinating. His love of all things that go vroom far exceeds his love of animals right now.

Donations Accepted

Their farm is FREE to the public but please consider offering a donation to help with the upkeep of everything. It’s the least we can do to help support such a wonderful cause and show appreciation to such a giving and generous family.

If you don’t have any plans this Saturday, make a trip out to Winterset to see Phoebe, Millie and Honeybee and all the other alpaca friends. Their hours are from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm every Saturday of the year. That’s right, even in the winter. What better way to spend a winter day? If you have to be out in the cold you might as well snuggle an alpaca to help stay warm.
